A 37-year-old Tochigi prefectural policeman has been arrested on suspicion of causing an accident while operating a vehicle intoxicated, and then fleeing the scene.

According to police, the arrested officer, Takashi Sasaki, is based at Sano police station, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police said the incident occurred at around 5:40 p.m. on Monday. Sasaki, who was not on duty at the time, was driving a car under the influence of alcohol and collided into the rear of a halted vehicle on a road in Horigome-cho, Sano City. He drove away and failed to report the accident.

I do hope we hear more about Sasaki: loss of job, driving licence and (temporarily) liberty.

I go out and drink to excess once or twice a year, before I do it, I make plans before hand so I will not be driving. No excuses, any policeman who endangers society needs to be fired. Hit and run deserves jail time.

Police officers are only human.

A three month pay cut for this policeman! That'll teach him!

Police breaks law. Should have double fine plus imprisonment.

What an example of the worst kind of policeman. Mind you having met a few over the years they are not the sharpest tools in the shed.

Agree 100%, although THIS idiot is on a whole different level. DUI AND a hit and run? disgusting.

A 10% pay cut for three months (maybe), and some playful teasing from his coworkers are all that will happen to him

If only he had BEEN on duty, then this would be the perfect story. Maybe in Saitama too just for good measure.

Either Japan actually has an higher crime rate than we are led to believe or Japanese police are alarmingly prone to committing crimes. Scary either way really.

Please explain your logic behind this statement. I'm not seeing it.
