Defense requests to let the couple communicate were rejected six times before the Tokyo court granted permission Friday.

This sentence needs o be re-written.

Despite six requests by defence lawyers to let the couple communicate, terrified judges rejected the request without reason, cowering from the prosecutor, until Friday when they probably cowed from national and international ridicule.

Even now, it's only by "videoconference". Must look that on up in the Oxford Dictionary. My spell checker does not recognise this new word.

To think about it a CEO usually gets around 3-5percent of a companies turnaround profit which for Nissan was somewhere in the 20bilion dollar range so he was owed more than what he was ever paid those things he allegedly did is really just a bit of creative accounting to avoid paying a large amount of tax.

It should never have gone to the police. If they believe it would save Nissan they are fools and I hope Nissan goes bust cause I for one won't ever buy a Nissan again.

CrickyNov. 22 07:02 am JSTYeh, how magnanimous of them to allow contact between spouses.

Still despite what you guys have posted, remember the case of the super-pervert R Kelly in America. The FBI has discovered that he's been getting deposited royalty money in a friend's account even though he's in prison awaiting trial for various gross sex offenses and the fact that his record label dropped him and his legal team quit.

You never know what Ghosn may be doing on the side from behind bars. The Tokyo police should be watching everything he does and says and should be recording it.

He has been charged with under-reporting promised compensation and breaching trust in dubious payments.

Yet when Saikawa did it, he gets to resign and walk away. No bias? Pffft

I believe that Carlos Ghosn could have become a victim of events out of his control

He lost self-control. Over the years he got addicted to power, money, celebrity...

What's the reason for that, anyway?

A few hints :

Mrs Carole Ghosn's personal drama during the second arrest

Mrs Carole Ghosn hosting the party (with mostly her relatives and fashion world friends) in Versailles on 9 mars 2014, (Nissan-Renault paying everything)

Mrs Carole Ghosn's wedding party in Versailles (Renault paying for the hall)

Mrs Carole Ghosn hiring decorators and ordering crazily expensive items for the Beyrouth villa (Nissan-Renault paying everything)

Mrs Carole Ghosn hosting the parties (with mostly her relatives and fashion world friends) in Cannes, Rio, etc (Nissan-Renault paying everything)

Mrs Carole Ghosn owning an offshore company that bought the yacht Shachou (and received funds that apparently originated in Nissan)

We don't know everything.

I sometimes wonder what if Goshn instead of claim himself innocent and heavily criticize the prosecutors and the Japanese juridical system would have pledge guilty, display some fake remorse and bow deeply asking forgiveness, maybe in this way he could have a penalty and a suspended sentence and probably be back home.

Yes, BUT the penalty (compensation payment,) would have been at least double.

The date for Ghosn's trial has not been set.

It seems a little puzzling that 3 judges (Kenji Shimozu, Kazunon Fukushima, and Kenji Matsushita) have been appointed as the trail judges, yet no date has been set.

How very generous of them - not!

how disgusting, degrading and dehumanizing the Japanese justice system is... How appalling that the Japanese justice department has prevented a man on financial charges from talking with his family. It's moments like this that I understand how Japan has not been invited to the Sc on the UN and how it's neighbours continue to push for war apologies etc... it is these uncivilised moments that speak volumes about Japan's character.

well said!

Is there really human rights in Japan ???.

About as much as there is Liberalism and Democracy in the LDP.

I am not married, so my experience of family and marriage is my parents relationship, their meaning of companionship.

And quite rightly is is not relevant in the context of Carlos and Rita Ghosn.

There are however extenuating circumstances to this sorry saga, political also Nissan as company, focused wihin its future organization.

I believe that Carlos Ghosn could have become a victim of events out of his control

Tribunal system in this country is insane! Ghosn's legal team should be fired. Ghosn should now find an international (USA) defense team and give the local court the wrath they rightfully deserve. You'll see how quickly the court will change their attitude. There is no legal ordinance, statue, article or order that stipulates such condition against family members unless they too are charged. When hired by Nissan as a foreigner, his international rights applies. Period. The court is to abide by the rules accordingly. The moment Ghosn was indicted in USA by SEC it officially becomes an international case. France had their share with early preliminary proceedings against him as well during his incarceration and was exonerated.

Ambushed at the airport on arrival, bizarre "interviews" in a detention centre, prolonged detention, bail with conditions that include non spouse contact, continued "Prosecutor" leaks to the media? Farcical if it were not real. Japan's justice system is juvenile at best.

Educator60, Carlos Ghosn is not a likeable fellow, some would suggest/contend Carlos Ghosn is a corporate hyena.

The question, my parents have rarely spent a day without the loving embrace of each other company. They are almost joined at the hip.

My point is Carlos Ghosn, first and foremost, is a Father and Husband, the odd walk in the park, pursued by the worlds media is a gross violation of what could amount to be the result of a boardroom coup d'etat.

There is more than a smidgen of Boardroom shenanigans, and an underlying political need to return Nissan to Japanese control.

How magnanimous from them (sarcasm)

So basically they ripped off every civil right to a man that is not even sentenced guilty and on the other hand Sakaizawa which admitted his crimes is free to retire and enjoy his wealthy life without any consequences?

What a noble example of democracy.

With perhaps the exception of trains, it seems like every night is Amateur Night in Japan.

This is absolutely vile, Saikawa walked away for the same manipulations prosecutors just don't have any fairness. They seriously need to burn someone anyone to justify their existence. Scum bags. Then after all of this some douch in a court to protect his friends will hand down a bizarre ruling that has nothing to do with legality or justice. Ahh beautiful Japan. Best to leave them on their own donkey Island and keep a continent away.

Ghosn's wife, Carole, had been banned from contacting him as a condition of his bail

What's the reason for that, anyway?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

This is a man who has not been convicted of anything. He's been stripped of all his civil liberties. He can't even use a telephone. And, 'when' he is found to be innocent he cannot sue the J-gov for his improper incarceration and destroying his life. What an absolute farce! FREE GHOSN!

It's extraordinary, the contrast between how Ghosn is being treated, compared with Saikawa.

everyone living in Japan should be very concerned about this attack on our freedom of speech/expression

well dude thats now how it works here; your filtering this through a humanitarian or Western lens.

Once you understand how it works, or doesnt work, here, your in a better position to deal with it.

Its about saving face, same as in China. You can exploit that in reverse, make them look bad in front of those who matter to them. You, as a gaijin, dont matter...lol. Thats my point; stop trying to think you do.

Japanese legal racket is a joke their handing of foreigners and foreign languages is absurd. I had to pay Tokyo District and High Court judges interpreter fees so they could accurately understanding every word of my testimony. When I later received court transcript learned the court appointed interpreter made up words I didn't even say to cover up for her for grasp of English. Judge - tell the court about your vision. Me: I wear progressive lenses that is trifocals. Interpreter - He wears Bosch & Lomb glasses.

One year after his arrest and the Tokyo court decides to allow Ghosn to talk with wife. However by via videoconference. Truly remarkable.......So much to the basic human right for family life.

what yubaru and cricky said.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Japanese prosecutors have claimed to the court that Ms. Ghosn’s criticism of Japan’s criminal justice system “constitutes a form of witness tampering,” according to a recent report in the New York Times (“Carlos Ghosn Hasn’t Seen His Wife in Months. Japan’s Prosecutors Want It That Way,” 7 August 2019)

When Japan’s prosecutors react to public criticism by taking punitive action, and the Japanese judges allow this to occur, everyone living in Japan should be very concerned about this attack on our freedom of speech/expression.

Will she be required to speak only Japanese like we were when we visited a friend who was being held for immigration issues

23 ( +24 / -1 )

To be fair, the prosecutors and judges should be barred from spousal contact for an equivalent length of time as this case falls apart. :)

21 ( +22 / -1 )

Yeh, how magnanimous of them to allow contact between spouses.

24 ( +25 / -1 )

Geez how gracious of them! (sarcasm!)
