Tokyo police arrest video game YouTuber for marijuana possession

Last year, the Japanese government said it would begin considering allowing the use of pharmaceuticals containing cannabis. That doesn’t mean that the country’s penal code is in any way getting laxer on recreational marijuana use, and the latest example comes with the arrest of a popular YouTuber.

On March 18, 21-year-old Yudai Nishikawa, who posts videos of himself playing video games under the name Neko-kun, was arrested for possession of 0.5 grams of dried cannabis, which police officers found on his person while inside a police station in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward. Nishikawa admitted that the cannabis was his. “Two and a half years ago, I bought it from a black person in Kabukicho [one of Tokyo’s bar districts],” Nishikawa said, placing the time of the transaction as not long after he moved to Tokyo. “I smoked marijuana to act cool. But smoking it makes you zone out and you can’t play video games well, so I made a point not to smoke while I was playing.”

The assertion by Nishikawa (whose channel had amassed a subscriber base of roughly 900,000) that he wasn’t under the influence while on camera may have been an attempt to indirectly plead for leniency, but he was still placed under arrest for violation of the Cannabis Control Law by possession.

As to why Nishikawa was in the police station in the first place, on the night of March 11 police officers had taken an intoxicated man into custody. When they searched the bag he was carrying they found 1.2 grams of cocaine. However, the man said that the bag, and its contents, were actually the property of his friend, who just so happens to be Nishikawa. Nishikawa was then called to the station for questioning, during which time he admitted that the bag and drugs were his and was placed under arrest. While at the station, a search of his person found the cannabis, leading to his second arrest and the additional charges he now faces.

Nishikawa admitted that the cannabis was his. “Two and a half years ago, I bought it from a black person in Kabukicho [one of Tokyo’s bar districts],”

Not sure if his statement were correct, not so many black person around Kabukicho. Mostly Japanese entertainment district that try to get Japanese customer.

Just wait until foreigner being ID and searched around that area because his statement, no matter whether those foreigners involved or not.

Tokyo police arrest video game YouTuber for marijuana possession

Ok, but I dont get why the 0.5 grams of cannabis is the headliner. He could have very well walked for it, IF that was the only amount. He got arrested for the COKE!

He admitted to it. Looking to get people "outraged" about such a small amount of marijuana? Cause you know they dont read the entire article before commenting, so you buried the real reason.

“Two and a half years ago, I bought it from a black person in Kabukicho [one of Tokyo’s bar districts],”

Japan is so retro. During the days of America's reefer madness cannabis was demonized and made an illicit drug by associating it with black jazz musicians and Mexicans.

Who keeps half a gram of marijuana for 2 and a half years?

And I agree about the "a foreigner sold it to me" scam. I remember someone who became the target of a police search because a Japanese drug user made the same excuse. The irony was that the foreigner never touched marijuana at all. His Japanese girlfriend was a regular smoker though. But seems that nothing excites the police more than the chance to find an evil foreigner to avert the blame from guilty Japanese.

Did the drug fried his brain? Who goes into a police station for questioning while carrying drugs?

If you read this as an Onion store, it make more sense

“Story” not store

Yubaru, I agree. The fact that he got arrested for cocaine possession is a much bigger crime, but Japan has decided it is going to die on the hill that marijuana is worse than anything else, so they will demonize it above all. By the way, did he also buy the cocaine from some black guy in Kabukicho? Maybe he should have said Roppongi!

What’s the point here? - Perhaps: “*We need to make an example of these darn drug users/ gamers & YouTubers*!??

Never have read such an elaborately-detailed & specific ‘confession’ on media other than from Japan’s gossip tabloids:

Nishikawa admitted that the cannabis was his. 2 & 1/2 yrs ago, I bought it from a black person in Kabukicho” … not long after he moved to Tokyo.I smoked marijuana to act cool. But smoking it makes you zone out and you can’t play video games well, so I made a point not to smoke while I was playing.” -

Lol… he really said he got it two years ago from a black person? Using the “black person” card probably works to get out of drama with illegal activities. Also, the quantity must have been large for him to still have. How lame. Hoping Black people aren’t targeted from his statement. Japan is already an archaic society and light years behind modern thinking, still thinking foreigners ruin its angelic society.

Nobody keeps drugs in a pocket for two and an half years. Excuse for leniency

And for the coke, as it was found in a bag claimed to be the friend’s bag, Nishikawa did certainly not admit it was his bag, so the police can not determine the Coke’s owner at this time.

"I bought it from a black person." Seriously?

2 ( +12 / -10 )

Sounds like an idiot.

And his friend buried him under the bus.

They should make this into a comedy sketch.

It’s been rumored(?) @commanteer 7:43am some veteran officers may keep a little of various substances on hand for ‘testing’ purposes:

He should’ve put his arrest & questioning on YouTube

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Hiro

Perhaps he went brain dead after entering the police station for questioning.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Let me guess, you are one of those that actually didnt read the article before commenting

ONLY the coke was in the bag, and he was carrying the 2.5 year old cannabis on his person! DOH!

I thought a youTuber was a type of potato.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

@sakurasuki

start at roppongi and head west on the line to shibuya, head north until the river and every station will be foreigner central. What are you smoking?

what a tool

And here I am in Canada, where there are government and private cannabis stores everywhere.

Japan is entirely backwards in this regards.

Years back,I once met a Japanese person who was bold enough and confided in me that whenever Japanese nationals are arrested with illegal stimulants, the easiest way out is to say that they got them from a gaijin and that they can't remember the gaijin and don't know where the gaijin went afterwards. If they admit that they got from a fellow Japanese, they'll be forced to take the J cops to the said Japanese and that will get them and their networks in serious trouble and revenge for snitching.

Must've not washed his pants for two and half years then. Also, never rat out who you bought the weed from. Always blame it on foreigners esp. black ones.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Confession is so easy in Japan that you swear they are all Christians using a confessional church at the police station.

Or Gosh could tell you another story.

It seems weird even fishy he rats a friend who come with drug too.

Last time I was up around Kabukicho it was indeed busy with African guys working the street corners trying to get punters into their bars....

This article is so misleading in so many ways.

Also, if he had 0.5 grams of pot from "two years ago" in his pocket, then it wouldn't have a trace of THC left in it. You wouldn't even know that it was pot. It'd look like regular dried dead grass.

This may be true, but suckers here always confess. Cops have no idea about drugs here. Keep your mouth shut and ride out your 30 days......they'll drop the case.

As Japan rapidly slips behind the modern world with an aging population and a general population still clueless on drugs other than alcohol. MJ is barely even intoxicating. my grandma even smoked it. For the Japanese people that still live in fear, you're wrong on this one. Reform asap.
