Tokyo Metropolitan Police said Friday that a sergeant stationed at Kamata police station has been arrested for assaulting a taxi driver after he tried to flee without paying the fare.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 5 a.m. in Miyamae Ward, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Fuji TV reported that the suspect, Kenji Kodama, 38, tried to get out of the taxi near his home without paying the 4,690 fare. When the driver tried to stop him, Kodama violently shoved him, police said. The taxi driver suffered minor injuries.

Kodama, who had been off duty since Wednesday, was quoted by police as saying he was too drunk to remember the incident.

"Stop or I'll call the police!"

"I am the police..."

The police officer was in a position to arrest criminals. And now he has been arrested for not paying the taxi fare. It's like putting the cart before the horse.

Not an impersonator. Like all countries Police officers in Japan are sometimes not cut from the best of clothes, so to speak.

" Like all countries Police officers in Japan are sometimes not cut from the best of clothes, so to speak."

Japan definitely has it share of bad apples BUT Malaysia police make Japanese police look like angels, in fact , Japan with all its woes still is much more civilized and above most South East Asian countries. in terms of what goes on in the news in Asia. especially like a corrupt , graft ridden , violent country like Malaysia 5th world country. Their Police will literally come up to you for a fake traffic violation and demand money! And we wont speak of India's police corruption, or Bangladesh, Thailand or Nepal's.

やぱり! As soon as I read the headline I knew this statement would be at the end of the article. It's amazing that being drunk can be used an excuse and, when backed up with an apology, you are set free! Being too drunk to remember something is not an excuse! It's an illness!

Japans ace up the sleeve line. " I was too drunk to remember" take responsibility for your own actions ! children!!!

I was drunk and can not remember any thing ...

"Hasn't this happened before?"

Yes, I remember an incident from late last year. EXACTLY the same story...

More cut and paste journalism from JT deliberately ignoring the REAL crime that happened in Tokyo that day!!

What a fine example he is for the men in blue

Guess, at least when he's drunk he took the taxi, instead of driving drunk

I wonder if this is they one they showed on NHK with footage from the taxi dash-cam?

"sergeant arrested for assaulting a taxi driver after he tried to flee without paying the fare." their economy must be getting bad...

Calling all cars, calling all cars! I could only imagine as he sits down for paper work and process if he is thinking "I made such a terrible mistake" or through sucking of teeth thinking "this is a lot of paper work"

Remember, arrested only means they took him to the station. You can bet that after the driver left, they laughed it off and he walked away.

Haven't we all done silly things when under the affluence of incahol?

I wonder how fast a one will come if Jayzee ran into a provoking nationalist?

So true.

The taxi employee overreacted. He should have been more civil and dealt with the man later when he wasn't drunk and then there would have been no incident. The officer would have paid the bill then.

Drinking problems with Japan again... Does the Japanese cannot regulate what they drink? Being drunk is not an excuse to do sh*tty things. Plus he is a police office, duty or off duty he should at least be a model to the people. They know what being drunk can do, they encounter drunk people a lot, yet still they themselves are doing the same thing..

Hee hee! And then rainbows will miraculously appear everywhere followed by prancing unicorns!

Dream on. If he's too drunk to remember the incident, why would he KNOW he didn't pay when he left the cab?

Alcohol makes EVERYONE stupid. No exceptions. Cops are not immune and should adjust their intake if they want to keep their job.

He was probably at an enkai (drinking party) with his coworkers lol. Since hes the sergeant they probably didnt let his cup become empty. I bet he wont drink like that again haha.
