Trains on the Tokyu Oimachi and subway lines were defaced with graffiti on September 16 and 17 respectively, police said Thursday.
According to police, station staff found two train cars spraypainted with graffiti at Futagotamagawa Station in Setagaya around 4:30 a.m. on Sept 16. On Sept 17, graffiti was found all over Tokyo Metro's subway trains at its depot in Shiohama early in the morning. Their operation schedules were not affected by the graffiti, the companies said.

Don't they have security?
And is it so easy to do that? They found it at 4:30, trains are left at the depot at around 2?

Search youtube or google on some of the tags. I bet you get a lead there, but the J-cops will only search winny.

This has got steadily worse over the last 10 years or so, whether it is stupid copycat Japanese kids or expat brats (of which Setagaya has more than its fair share), who knows. I hope that they are caught and have their aerosol cans inserted where the sun don't shine.
fatloser' your comments are ridiculous, this is criminal damage, nothing less.

It's paint buddy!!!!!!!!! P=A=I=N=T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure that someone will develope a surface that spray paint doesn't stick to and make a fortune from it. The rim of the golden chalice is chipped!!
Altria
At least it's semi-artistic, as far as graffiti goes
fatloser
Ya can't tell what line it is when the do that!!
nisegaijin
That looks kinda neat and cool. They should leave it as is.

More evidence for my theory that Japan has moved into the 1970s.

so sad - but it will create more jobs as they will now employ security guards and systems at depots.
This is just the start. Last time I was in the UK you could not see out of the windows as the "graffeti" was "etched" into the windows - can't just wash that away with solvent...

It's pro-Obama communication, but the authorities just can't read it...

definately where these guys got there ideas. personally, i like graffiti. most of the artists are really talented. tagging however is totally lame... takes no talent to do and is a bit of an eye sore.
graffit = art
tagging = vandalism

There's a time and a place for everything and public trains are not the place for graffiti. In developed countries they supply areas for these bored teenagers to practice their art and keep it off the trains. Australia recently introduced sales restrictions on spray cans to curb some of the tagging. Find these twits and make them clean it off with a toothbrush.

"Their operation schedules were not affected by the graffiti"
Unlike here in Australia, the first site of graffiti on a train they will take it out of service and disrupt operations.
Go Japan! let the graffiti covered train run until the end of its schedule.

Nice, 2 days in a row. Kind of think they look a bit nicer. Maybe they should hire these kids, adults full-time.

Graffiti is an art but against the law, 'IS IT?' Where was the security at the time?
japanyesterday
goes well with the whole 80s trend thing going on right now
MichaelJP
In Australia, that's just an excuse to cover up constant schedule disruptions due to poorly maintained trains and equipment, and untrained late or missing staff.
Moderator: Stay on topic please. Australia is not relevant to this discussion.

Self-promoting egotistcal anti-social juvenile vandalism.
Make a painful example of them for other would-be social psychopaths.

"nice" graffiti. Where are the artists? Pity ,they should come out and reap the reward of their labours.
CavemanLawyer
Why yes. If your going to be a social psychopath, we should funnel them into anything but graffiti. Yeahright.
USARonin
If one or a couple of citizens were to eff them up, or if they "fell down" a couple of times on the way to the koban, I didn't see anthin'.
You, C?
gogogo
They should leave it on there and use the train, it looks really good.

I hope they catch those "foreign" graffiti artists :p

Equivalent to the "man falls off bike in the village" story really.

Japan is the one place I had hoped that graffiti wouldn't emerge. It's the one so-called form of "self expression" that I wish wouldn't be "copied" from Americans like everything else is, by young Japanese so desperate to establish an identity. I thought that growing up Japanese was still good for instilling that all important Moral Compass. Guess no one knows how to read one of those things anymore.
Knowing their potential for artistic detail though, you might see some amazing pieces of work pretty soon.
nath
I would have avoided using the word "respectively" where it is in the article. It is possible to promote "graffiti" art however and not commit a crime.
