Japan is moving out of synch with itself. Effectively recognzing same-sex marriage rights but denying same-sex marriage.

It seems that way.

Legalizing same-sex marriage the most logical way to sort this out.

Get it done and focus on more difficult and chronic issues to solve.

Another reason Japan should join the rest of first world counties in reconfirming the legal status of marriage between adults. I hope it stands.

A same-sex partnership is not a marriage.

A same-sex marriage is a marriage. Tens (hundreds? thousands?) of thousands of same-sex marriages around the world prove this.

only 16% of the population are opposed to same-sex marriages. Hang in there buddy.

A same-sex partnership is not a marriage.

Says who?

It's a small step, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

Same-sex partners should a) be able to marry just like everyone else, and b) should be treated the same under the law.

Personal prejudice and bigotry is not a logical foundation upon which to base a counter argument, and that is fact.

I’d say the odds on same-sex marriage being legalized in Japan in the next few years are much lower than 50/1.

No need for hysterics and over emotional responses

Really? I see it as pretty rational prediction based on how things have shifted in Japan over the past decade or so.

The direction of travel is very clear.

I’d stick with much lower than 50/1. To get more precise, even money within the next 5 years?

If you find some crazed bookie taking bets and offers you 50/1, snap the hand off.

No, because by definition and by law marriage is between a male and female.

Good ruling. "Same-sex partners" should be eligible for this and other benefits. I support this 100% - as long as we keep calling them "same-sex partners".
