Traffic light push button devices at pedestrian crossings vandalized at 11 places in Saitama Pref

Police said push button devices that turn traffic lights red at pedestrian crossings have been vandalized at 11 locations in Satte, Saitama Prefecture, between last November and Jan 16.

Police said the front of the devices had been smashed in, making them inoperable, Sankei Shimbun reported. The 11 damaged devices were all at crossings within a two-kilometer radius of Satte Station on the Tobu Nikko Line.

Police said they are examining street surveillance camera footage to try and identify the person or persons responsible.

Probably because the freaking things don't work anyway. They are just placebo buttons.

Not sure what these types are but most Tokyo ones are just adding audio aid for the blind when pressed.

Many of the buttons around here (in Saitama) definitely activate the traffic/walk signals. Some just activate the audio aid for blind pedestrians, but many actually cause the signal to change.

These buttons are the same all over the country and do not work! As BBOCB said, they're just placebo buttons.

Oh, good grief! Placebo buttons? Are you serious?

Saitama should get its own crime section on this site.

Speed: Saitama should get its own crime section on this site.

I agree. I asked my Japanese wife about the seemingly disproportionate crime levels in Saitama, expecting her to say there was nothing strange going on there, but she said that Saitama is famous for having a lot of crime and a lot of it is violent or sexual in nature. I'm not sure if this is true but she sure seems to think so.
