TV personality Bobby Ologun fined ¥100,000 for domestic abuse

The Saitama District Court has fined TV personality and former mixed martial artist Bobby Ologun for assaulting his wife last year.

According to the ruling on Thursday, Nigerian-born Ologun, 55, who has Japanese citizenship and goes by the name Bobby Konda, assaulted his then 46-year-old Japanese wife, by hitting her in the face at their home in Urawa Ward, on May 16 last year, Sankei Shimbun reported. Ologun’s wife called 110 and said her husband had beaten her.

The woman suffered a fractured right cheekbone and an injury to her right wrist. She was quoted by police as saying her husband struck her after she rebuked him for opening a letter addressed to her.

Ologun and his wife have three children who were home at the time but none of them were hurt, police said.

Ologun denied the charge and was released on bail two days later and moved to Chiba Prefecture. However, the investigation proceeded and prosecutors indicted him last September.

He got off cheap.

He should be in prison for assault.

I don't know about Japan, but in the US it's actually illegal to open someone else's mail. But regardless of that, I really hope his wife and kids are able to stay safely away from him.

This was in the news Thursday and he was accused of poking his wife on the cheek with a finger. Nowhere, not even in court, was there any mention of a fractured cheek bone.

A report I saw on NHK a couple of weeks ago said he pushed her and she had no injuries. Of course pushing is still domestic violence but not on the level of a blow to the face that breaks a cheekbone.

If he was so violent why hasn't he been charged with assault?

Because Japan is a misogynistic country that allows men to get off lightly when they commit rape and domestic violence.

Simple answer.

Bobby Ologun should have been fined years ago for that awful accent he uses on tv. He can speak much more normal, but chooses to sound like a neanderthal because it's "funny."

Isn’t this like the 5th time this has happened? That we’ve heard of? Either he needs to be locked up, she’s lying, or maybe both just need to disappear.

Olugun is a disgusting piece of work, always has been. Watching his "Japanese" baby-talk on TV years ago was cringeworthy. Its a shame they cant send him back where he came from, since he is now Japanese.

Only cowards and scum hit women. Hope karma catches up with this rubbish.

Bobby needs to stop the stupid gimmick. IRL, he is fluent in English, French, and Japanese; owns an international trading company, and is from an elite upper class family.

On a late night talk show, another comedian mentioned the above, and asked Bobby why he acts like such an idiot. Bobby replied that he’s just “playing the game” for money.

The thing this coward needs to do is stop hitting his wife. So what if he speaks 50 languages, owns a trading company and is "upper class" (says a lot about the "lower classes" in his country.)

a pathetic slap on the wrist.

The animal deserves jail time.

and that's if they get convicted, let alone charged, let alone arrested.

Fined and then deported would have been better.

I'm pretty sure it is the same case, as I remember the last one also mentioned he opened a letter addressed to his wife.

Fined and then deported would have been better.

He's a naturalised Japanese, where would they deport him to?

Again, I haven't been able to find any other reference to Olegun's wife sustaining a fractured cheekbone in any other report on the case apart from this one, not even on the Sankei website. Hmmm.

Don't be violent like a stone age animal. Jail for 5 years will be good for this dude.

Got any data to back that up ??? Probably not. Bit a pathetic sweeping statement, wouldn't you say???

Whats pathetic is men who deny that domestic violence and rape are a societal problem in every country, and then ask strangers on the internet to do research that they themselves could do if they really and truly cared about the truth.

Yeah I'm sure half the arresting officers are misogynistic, but the other half can relate and don't like to be used as frivolous weapons.

Fighto! "Olugun is a disgusting piece of work, always has been. Watching his "Japanese" baby-talk on TV years ago was cringeworthy."

He is a product of Japan's media -- "Hey, a black guy! Let's make him appear stupid and mumble in broken Japanese so we can have a good laugh!" He milked them for it; not his problem.

That said, I agree that he's scum for doing what he did (would nice to see your outrage when it's a native-born, but hey!). He should have gotten a LOT more than a 100,000 yen fine, which he can pay off immediately. In many countries, such an attack constitutes "assault with a deadly weapon". So, again, while he is entirely to blame for his actions, it is the system that is to blame for his rise, and now his punishment... or the lack thereof.

Did JT embellish the information regarding this story? I saw this on the news too and there was no mention of a broken cheekbone. Just a painful grab of her wrist and a finger poke to her face.

His dumb handicapped sounding accent that makes all of us shudder needs to be taken down from any tv program. It is demeaning and insulting.

Any broken bone in Japanese is 重傷, even a finger or toe. If he had injured her to that extent, that's the textbook way to report it in the Japanese language.

All kinds of nastiness can happen in marriages, so be grateful if yours is an uneventful one.

It is his trademark, much like Arnold in the US.

Btw, I "martial artists" is a bit of a euphemism. He is muscular, but completely unskilled. Bringing in people like him, his brother, Sapp, Akebono etc. destroyed the MMA events in Japan after such a good start by turning them into a clown show.

Celebrities get different sentences than the rest of us. He also checked the blocks for employed or well-off, first-time in court, apologetic, and Japanese citizen as the judge used the sentencing formulae to see where he winds up. Another offense and he will have a more severe punishment!

former mixed martial artist

What can You expect ??.. send back that scumbag where he came from..

Can’t deport him as he is a Japanese citizen. Either way, assault is usually not a serious enough crime to deport a resident-status foreigner.

And real martial-artists, not the thug with a chip on the shoulder types, are some of the most tolerant, easy-going types of people, because they know what it feels like to be hit, and they are disciplined through training.

I'm saying that if someone is interested in the truth then they would do the research themselves instead of asking others to do it for them.

The story was Bobby had opened some mail sent to his wife. She became angry and started hitting him to which he defended himself. I would N E V E R hit my darling or a woman nor do I condone it! If I saw a man hitting a woman or knew some one who does, I would do what I can to protect her. But here's my thing :

If a man hits another man, he can defend himself. (rules from the Book of Man)

If a woman hits another man, he is immediately restricted from defending himself?

Bobby also could've qouted his wife in saying she hit him for opening her mail and would be seen as defence. But next time, don't hit her. Restrain her! Calm the situation and talk about the situation.

Real men or Women do NOT hit or abuse their partners. No one really know the truth here, but based of their statements it sounds as if this is a finished marriage and a divorce is a much happier solution.

What do you expect a stupid mistake from a Baka person!!
