Two elementary school girls, aged 11 and 12, were hit by a car that was involved in a collision with another vehicle in Kyoto on Thursday. Police said Friday the 11-year-old girl remained in a coma.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 4 p.m. Fuji TV reported that two cars collided into each other at an intersection in Minami Ward. The two girls, who were walking nearby, were hit by one of the cars that overturned.

Both girls were unconscious when they were taken to hospital. One of them recovered; however, the other one is in a coma, police said.

Police arrested the drivers, Yoneo Hirayama, a 55-year-old self-employed man, and Yoshio Nonomura, a 44-year-old office employee, at the scene on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury.

The incident occurred at an intersection near Jujo subway station. There are no traffic lights at the intersection.

How fast were there two going that one of the cars would end up overturned after impact?!

"Suspicion of negligent driving?"

Gee, ya' think?

Please said Friday the 11-year-old girl remained in a coma.

I think you meant 'police said' .

Moderator: Yes, thank you. It has been corrected.

As a cyclist here in Kobe I have to say the standard of driving is shocking, hope she can pull through and make a full recovery.

"negligent driving" is the catch-all phrase.

"The TWO GIRLS, who were walking nearby, were HIT by one of the cars that OVERTURNED"

They must have been going some speed...

I wish they give these drivers a big lesson .... not a few weeks and released.

Japanese drive at 50 km/h everywhere, be it a straight road in the middle of nowhere or an urban back alley. The only thing that surprises me is that these things don't happen more often.

I once witnessed an accident involving two cars in which one overturned and landed upside-down. Luckily no one was seriously hurt. One car (I think it was a kei) was hit in the side by the other car coming out of a side street. I think it was the combination of the impact from the side plus the driver of the kei applying the brakes that sent the car flying in quite a spectacular way. It didn't appear to have been going all that fast.

I hopes the little girl recovers.

One of them must have run a red signal. Happens all the time and sick to death of putting my life in the hands of speed freaks, show off's and the downright impatient.

As a driver and (more so) a motor biker I'm all for putting cameras at all traffic signals. It would pay for itself in a week the way these idiots drive

C'mon little girl…mum and dad miss you!

It only takes one speeding vehicle to overturn another vehicle.

Clueless, I don't think one of them ran the signal as the last of the article says "The incident occurred at an intersection near Jujo subway station. There are no traffic lights at the intersection"

Just a few days ago, me and a young woman were waiting at an intersection for the light to turn green for pedestrians. As always, I stand behind one of the metal poles dotting every intersection, while she dangled her feet over the edge of the curb, inches from cars zipping by.

I'm not saying what happened here is avoidable or were the girls' fault, but people need to give some thought to their surroundings. Drivers can get distracted or suffer from a sudden medical condition and that's enough to send thousands of pounds of steel, glass and rubber up the curb and mow everyone and everything down.

So your solution is... dash from metal pole to metal pole and shove anybody already there out of the way?

I stand far from the curb, behind something sturdy. HOPEFULLY, if a car jumps the curb, that sturdy object, usually a metal pole, takes the brunt of the hit and has slowed the car down enough to not kill me. If you like to stand inches from moving cars, be my guest.

There is not enough details to make a complete judgement. All I see from here is a car accident and 2 girls that happened to be in the area getting hit by one of the cars that got overturned.

You underestimate the intuitive powers of JT readers. We know everything.

Drivers here are crazy. Last week in the morning two PTA members were doing crosswalk duty and they held out their yellow flags to stop cars so that kids could cross safely. One car went through their yellow flags..
