Two men broke into the apartment of a bar operator in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Monday and stole 4.2 million yen in cash.
According to police, the victim, 29, said two men, whom he didn’t know, broke into his residence in a municipal apartment building at around 4 a.m., Sankei Shimbun reported. He told police one of the men used a stun gun on him, while the other one bound his wrists behind his back with handcuffs.
The intruders searched his apartment and made off with the cash. After they had gone, the man managed to get his cell phone, call a friend's number and yell for help, while still handcuffed. The friend called police.
The thieves are described as being 170-180 cms tall and were wearing all black and helmets.
Police are questioning the bar operator about who might have known he had that much money in his apartment.

Not fishy at all.

Hoarding large amounts of cash and stashing it in a wardrobe at home is VERY common in Japan, especially among the elderly.

Insider job. They clearly know there was cash there.

Bloody stupid to keep that much cash at home with wholly inadequate security. Either bank it or spend some of it on improving the security.
Of course we don’t know and he may have had a valid reason to hold that much cash but the suspicion of tax evasion does spring to mind.

Facial recognition and Siri?
That's what I do when handcuffed ; )

Who keeps $40K cash in their apartment?

I'm impressed. With his wrists bound behind his back by handcuffs, he still managed to successfully dial his friend's number. Without being able to see the screen, I wonder how many non-friends he woke up at 4am before landing on his friend's number.

They're called credit cards. Use them.

What is it with Japanese and not using banks? Just plain stupid to keep that kind of cash at home.

I know some second hand dealers. They race each other to be the first to get access to elderly deceased peoples homes. They almost always find the cash under the tatami.

Yeah, right

They are rather easy to move your hands them behind to your front by bending forward and sliding them down the back of your legs then sitting down then slipping them passed your legs. Not really that impressive to be honest.

Fair enough. The ATMs are not that convenient here but I’d still rather pay a 210yen surcharge than being robbed of 4M yen:
