FYI, this is exactly what happens. Oh and what should the authorities do to all the Japanese, literally a hundred times more than the US Military folks do, who commit the same, or worse crimes?
How about "sentencing in kind?"
Mocheake
It's the SAME one that was in the news a few weeks ago. They'll keep it there for as long as possible too. If the guy is guilty, throw the book at him but there's no need to keep throwing out new news stories about the same case unless something substantial is happening. In this case, the guy is being charged so I see why it is in the news but people here want to act like it is a new case when it is not.
Mocheake
Maybe you can dig up something from the 19 th century and make sure you include their race too. You probably think you are cunning with that screen name but you might be short somewhere else. Potential victims just waiting? It's been almost 30 years since that happened and there are no potential victims except in your mind.
Mr Kipling
Yet another one? Can you see why Okinawa may not want to be a US base?
kwatt
J police officers' crime is just another domestic matter. The US servicemen crime is a political matter. These soldiers are government officials (paid by own government) who must not commit crimes in the first place in foreign countries. Hence US military should recruit them very carefully.
Yubaru
FYI, take a hard look at a map of Okinawa, that area you refer to isnt "northern" Okinawa.
And you are 100% wrong on the "reason" why Futenma is being moved, but like so many other anti-base conspiracy types you can't admit it.
kwatt
Why the US returned Okinawa to Japan? Because Japan pays a lot of money to the Okinawa US military. As a result, the US can keep military bases there ever. The US government thinks Okinawa US military bases are strategically important for the US and its national interest.

Why try to protect such an idiot? He will be fired from the US military back in the US. I've heard such ex-soldiers committed same crimes again back home. He needs some kinda punishment to prevent another crime over there.

@Fighto,
We don’t know the facts and he denied the allegations and it’s innocent until proven guilty, unless you would rather have the Chinese in Okinawa.
Besides, more Japanese police officers are indicted for the same charges than US servicemen so your “not sending their best” shtick is getting tiresome.

Sexual assault causes lifelong trauma for victims, but to provide context, the public must understand that while one case may be reported to the police or media, hundreds of incidents in private settings or on public transport go unreported would have happned on that same day.

I’ve read this article 100s of times.

The US military is made up of volunteers. People with lots of options are much less likely to enlist, so the pool of possible recruits is shifted towards people, who for many reasons, have been disappointed with their lives and the available choices.
Of course, if you mix young, aggressive, men with alcohol and women, something is going to happen. We hope it is love and a great relationship that makes both of them happy, but it can be 1-sided and frustrating, especially when the cultural differences change from very attractive to frustrating. Young military people aren't trained in every culture. They are told to stay out of trouble and sent on their way. Bad choices get made.
Anyway, prosecute him to the fullest extent of Japanese law, jail him if found guilty, and deport him, with a lifetime ban after his time is served. The conviction should get him thrown out of the US Miltary which will make it difficult to get a job for the rest of his life back in the US. Every job application asks about convictions and dishonorable discharges from the military. Checking either box is almost always a "do not hire" thing for companies.
Young men with a boner and high emotion seldom think about their actions impacting the rest of their lives.

Hmm... previous articles noted that it was the Defense ministry that didnt report the crimes to the prefectural government. Now whomever wrote this article is throwing shade on the cops.
And using the excuse of "victims privacy" in this, excuse THESE recent cases, is pure and utter BS. They never "cared" before, why the sudden and abrupt change?
Yubaru
Yeah, but one has to get used to the "court of JT" which is ALWAYS right! Forget anything about a day in court, lynch them already, as EVERYONE knows Japanese dont lie, and if they accuse a US Military person of ANY crime, they are always right!
Fighto!
The recruitment standard for US Marines is clearly a very, very low bar. They certainly are not sending their best.
Why is there even any need for these personnel to be off base, mixing with locals?
If found guilty, I hope he spends a minimum of 10 years in a Japanese prison.
kwatt
Why do not US military recruit good persons? Bad ones usually have some kinda troubles in the past. Those idiots don't understand or don't care about the law.
Sh1mon M4sada
Convict him quickly, lockup. Nothing to do with national defense.

JJE
To the contrary. Not trying to sound too facetious but if Japan returned control of Okinawa to the U.S. it would solve their biggest national defense issue with their worst neighbor.
rocketpig
I don't think the US thinks Okinawa belongs to Japan. It is only in name like de Garcia island. If it were US territory, it would be subject to Congress oversight. Okinawa was given to Japan by the US but obviously the actions betray their thinking.
Japantime
No doubt the US military will send him home without any type of punishment like they did with the drunk driver who killed some kids near Mount Fuji.
Mike_Oxlong
The Northern part of Okinawa. Right where they are relocating the Futenma Marine Corps Air Station. The base that the perps of the rape of a 12-year-old by three black marines in September 1995. Happy anniversary!! The move of Futenma MACS was supposed to alleviate the rapey marine situation. Ha ha. There are people in Northern Okinawa too. Potential victims just waiting...
JJE
All too typical behaviour. And not just in Okinawa or even Japan mind you.
Best solution is for them to leave permanently.
Yubaru
Then there would literally be no one left on the island as assaults are committed by Japanese citizens far more often than the occasional, ALLEGED one's by US military folks!
deanzaZZR
Here's a straightforward solution to the continued sexual criminal violence against Japanese nationals by USA military, lock him up, kick them out.
elephant200
The suspect, who is in U.S. military custody,questioned voluntarily by local police.
Of course he is voluntarily,now he is protected by the US military and he won't be handed to a local court !
deanzaZZR
Come on, listen to the USA Navy!
Countries which have invaded Okinawa:
Japan = yes
USA = yes
China = no
