An unemployed man of no fixed address was arrested in Chiba on Tuesday over the kidnapping of a 5-year-old girl. According to police, the man -- who has not yet been identified -- approached the girl at around 6:40 p.m. on Monday at the entrance to a supermarket in Hanamigawa Ward. The girl's mother was shopping inside. He told her that her older brother had been in a car accident and said that her mother had sent him to pick her up.
The girl's mother came out of the supermarket and spotted the pair leaving in a car. She called the emergency services to report the kidnapping. A police search found the pair in a business hotel at dawn on Tuesday.
According to police, the accused man admits to the charge of kidnapping, but when asked about his motives, he was quoted as saying, "I don't want to say."© Compiled from news reports
