University student arrested for posting naked pictures of 13-year-old girl

Police have arrested a 20-year-old University of Tokyo student for taking several pictures of a naked 13-year-old school girl and circulating them via his mobile phone.

According to police, the student, identified as Himuka Taira, faces charges for both child pornography, and hiring a minor for sex acts. Fuji TV reported that at the end of January, Taira met with the young girl on a social network site. After taking pictures and filming her in the nude, Taira proceeded to share the images using his cell phone.

Police said Taira has admitted to the charges and said he knew the girl was only 13.

The University of Tokyo? Not to judge based on one incident, but has the quality of student fallen from my day (1998-2002)?

Toadi has really been producing some real winners recently.

This guy may have high scholastic ability but completely lacks wisdom (judgement).

Aaron, Hollywood in what country? In Hollywood USA. if someone does same action. about 12 years in jail. More than manslaughter cases.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

If you take pics and vids of a nude 13 year old girl, don't circulate it.

Beast

Child abuse, and spreading child pornography. Lock the little tosser up. Children need to be better protected from these criminals.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Some people in this world just need to get their ass kicked. Repetitively.

If you take pics and vids of a nude 13 year old girl, don't circulate it.

No one should be taking pictures of a nude 13 year old girl. Ever.

15 ( +23 / -9 )

I don't get it. A 20 yr old student isn't aware that one no longer has privacy as we knew it in today's technology?!

6 ( +7 / -1 )

That is sad.

I imagine this is mortifying or beyond for a 13 yo girl to have happen to her. Everyone will see it, everyone will talk about it (at her school etc), and it will probably be on the internet forever.

I hope she has some resilience to deal with it.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Wait... the 13 year-old willing posed for nude pics?

I agree! So much for that Japanesedrive to go to the "best" because the people who go there are supposedly the "best" and will be. As one poster said, this guy may not have had the social graces one would expect. Sort of goes in line with the other article posted today on the pro's and con's for a woman to be a man's "first girlfriend.": I doubt very seriously if this guy has ever had a grilfriend, in the terms of an adult woman, and is still stuck looking at young girls.

What is also sad, that a 13 year old girl is posting herself on a hook-up site. Instead of going after people who download movies, the internet police in Japan need to be focusing more on that crime.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Sometimes the shift of focus in people's reactions takes my breath away. Never mind which university the culprit is affiliated to - never mind privacy concerns over what is posted - above all, don't try to suggest it wasn't all the fault of the perpetrator.

Good to see my Japanese alma mater making it onto the pages of the illustrious JT. Last week it was a nutty translator from over at biomedical research (I believe) bringing down aircraft in Anchorage (not part of Canada). This week it is probably an undergrad. Short price favourite is the law school. Lots of weirdos in law. Scary thing is many end up running the country.

Whatever the case, he is probably going to be ex Todai very soon. I believe being arrested by the rozzers is still grounds for being John the Baptist (served your head) at Hongo TAFE.

PS. Cannot wait for the cherry blossom party they have every year, recent events will make for interesting conversation.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

I don't care about this mans education, and I don't care about his age... wait scratch that. He's 20 which is legally and adult in Japan, and he took pictures of a girl 13 years old barely in her teens. Child pornography and pedophilia no matter what way someone says it. I don't concern myself with the lolicon manga/anime (a fictional illustration), but when you involve real people and compromise them sexually especially if they're minors, I've got no compassion for the sick pedophile that exploits a young girl/boy (someone's daughter/son etc.) and hope he gets put away for a very long time.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Hey, at least he didn't screw her, right? Besides, unless she's cute, who cares.

No one should be taking pictures of a nude 13 year old girl. Ever.

Unless you're the 13-yr-old girl.

Wait... the 13 year-old willing posed for nude pics?

Yes, it's not too hard to imagine an impressionable youngster being flattered by the attentions of a Todai - A TODAI - student! They're held in (mistakenly) high esteem just for having passed the entrance exam. Says nothing of their personal qualities as this scumbag's case clearly shows.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

HonestDictator: "I don't concern myself with the lolicon manga/anime (a fictional illustration)..."

Glad you don't. But you must be aware, surely, that a society that allows, even stands up for, things such as gang rape in manga and lolita anime, etc., is going to breed men like this scum. I'm with you on the hope that he gets put away, though. Sadly, it's unlikely to be for a long time, if he gets any time at all. I'm guessing given where he goes to school the parents have a bit of money, and it'll be a compensation pay-off. Then the guy will be free to write about it, or people copy and draw about it, in the mags you don't concern yourself with.

That is quite an interesting guess. What is it based on exactly?

Umm...how about just not taking the pics in the first place, eh?

@Lowly You may have missed the part where she put herself online with the intention of getting paid. I don't know how she feels about her pics online, but I seriously doubt any of her classmates or teachers are going to see them since the guy was not one of her peers mailing people who know her.

I would not guess how she feels about any of this at all without knowing her full background and without meeting her in person. Its foolish to think all 13 year olds are alike, or all girls are alike. 13 was the tradition age of adulthood in Judaism and they still celebrate it as such. Just because its 2014 does not mean everybody lives our version of 2014, even in our own countries.

Also I have to wonder if everyone would feel differently about this if he was also 13. Why?

smith-

sorry, that's an easy association for a lot of people to make, but I believe erroneous. In my home country, and likely yours too, there is plenty of gang rape, although there is no gang rape manga, at least not in high circulation. fantasy fiction/art generally seems to have low correlation to people's actions.

are there more gang rapes in Japan that say the US? is it because of manga?

further, is this case in question, of an underager being paid by an adult, affected by manga with gang rape?

It's not just about being "unfair" to Japan, it's about the understanding of violence, and its victims. humans, primarily males, are violent. they are violent in different ways at different times for different reasons. you really have to know about that and accept it to have any serious dialog about how to fix it.

Blaming this incident on Todai, on Japan, or on manga, is really just counter productive and naive.

And unfair to the girl as well, imo.

Humm...Anatomy classes are getting out of hand. Remember, study specimens must be consenting adults. In my opinion, taking pictures of anybody naked, no matter if they are children or adults, relatives or strangers, definitely is not a good idea.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@Smith, that kind of logic is only reserved for people that can't see the boundary between fiction and reality. And only very sick people would attempt to turn those types of fictional tastes into reality. Some folks don't even need that and they still do mentally disturbing / horrific actions without any inspiration from an outside source. If we were to blame fictional films/movies/video games then we'd have to start charging every violent film/game/manga for murder/rape/etc even though there were no real people/animals/zombies harmed in the process. You can't press charges unless the victim or their relatives suddenly somehow appear in reality and makes a charge saying they were harmed/assaulted or what have you unless they actually exist.

Rapists/murderers/etc visualize what they want to see inside their minds and project their fantasy on the victim without even seeing the harm they're doing because they're so focused on meeting the desires of whats going on in their own sick minds . This man is exactly the same and therefore dangerous. He fantasized about pedophilia (as I'd expect from a lot of pedophiles) and actually picked someone's child to commit his crime. People that blur that line between reality and fantasy and can't tell the difference are extremely dangerous and are mentally unstable in the first place. Just last year we had a crime commited by a 16-17 teen that murdered a young girl and dismembered her because, "he was interested in anatomy and wanted to see what it was like in real life."

Way to go kid. Get into the "best" college in Japan then throw your life away....

1 ( +2 / -1 )

LOL - it's funny to see two posters here name-dropping that they went to Todai.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Good reference, Osaka_Doug. This kind of this is becoming what I believe is a small epidemic among young people, the direct result, in my opinion of the rampant pornography on the internet combined with all those handhelds that take pictures (and that most parents buy for their kids).

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

If anyone is to suggest that a 13 year old GIRL who has barely been living in her grown up body (assuming she has breasts ) is responsible for being manipulated by a 20 year old MAN, let me set the record straight. Victims if rape/sexual assault / porn are VICTIMS especially at the age of 13. There is a reason that the law has decided that someone who is 13 (!!!!!) cannot give CONSENT to have photos of their naked body taken. I don't give a crap what site she was on "selling herself". She probably has some serious familial issues that drive her to the point of putting herself out there. Just like people who are so drunk they also cannot CONSENT to sex. And you know if you have sex with someone who isn't coherent enough to give you an very happy response then DONT do it. This man is a POS.

0 ( +6 / -7 )

Sundown-

Nope, I didn't miss that. I understand she chose to meet with this guy for money. But that is different from having her naked body and videos all over the internet for all time.

Poor judgement or desperate circumstances leading a kid to sell themselves is unfortunate, but to have that poor judgement lead to videos that will stay on the net for ever, well just that much harder to live down and get beyond your poor judgement. As for who's seen it... well I don't know, and neither do you. News travels fast and now that cops are investigating, well, someone might find it. Then there's the constant fear that someone will see it someday.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This guy did a serious disservice to this girl, he should be made to do some jail time and pay her a hefty sum of money over the years, and it may take a number of years for him to earn the money to give her, as his arrest and jail sentence would hamper his ability to find a high-paying job.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I imagine this is mortifying or beyond for a 13 yo girl to have happen to her.

It depends on the girl. While I agree that its likely any girl who did this 'willingly' likely has some serious issues in her life, there is no guarantee that she is the innocent type that would be horrified by the pics.

I'm guessing given where he goes to school the parents have a bit of money, and it'll be a compensation pay-off.

That is quite an interesting guess. What is it based on exactly?

Based on Japanese law - it allows for 'jidan', basically a settlement between parties to make the problem go away before the offender is officially charged.

Although I will admit, I'm not sure which laws this is limited to. I would imagine if you murdered someone, jidan wouldn't be an option. But I bet it is for rape, or taking naked pictures of minors.

i'm sure she was aware of that possibility before letting him take pictures and video, so she'll deal with it. it's not like he was taking them without her knowledge like in some cases.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

nice to see Todai-jin upholding national standards. Agree, there is a chance that a payment to her parents will lead to charges being dropped. do we know how he was caught JT? someone reported him? He sent them to a 'satsu?

I think the speculation here is not good for the victim.

Funny that so many JTers only blame the 20 year old idiot, but what the hell was this 13 year old girl doing on this social network?? Asking questions about her homework?? NO! She is a PROSTITUTE! Oh, so 13 is too young to know that your body can get you $$?? NO, many, too many young girls already know the power they have and the $$ they can get if they do sexual favors for others, not only here in Japan but ALL over the world! This 13 year old should also be arrested!!

Elbuda MexicanoFeb. 17, 2014 - 06:55PM JST

She is not a prostitute, for she did not receive any money for the photos.

Photos were "shared" between the girl and the 20 year old student. Still it is a crime of production of child pornography. Both the student and the girl are potentially guilty.

lol I went to the University of Tokyo ooooo, tell you something my father never went to University but he made a hell of a lot more than the average Uni graduate. his hard work ethic and good business sense made him a millionare many times over (almost $20million) when he retired a few years ago. left high school at 16 and never looked back. oh and he didnt need a attend a certain college to make him feel good about himself. he does that just fine sitting beside the pool of one of the 4 homes he owns. LOL

Sorry, here in Japan and in many parts of ASIA, prostitution starts at a VERY YOUNG AGE! 13?? It is already going on 24/7 here in Japan! 13 years old and is not aware of her own breasts, sexual power to get $$ etc..from dirty old men, and just dirty men with $$, they know and enough of them take advantage of this on the DE AI KEI sights etc..it is the call girl service disguised as "playing" with LINE, Facebook, Twitter etc...oh you wanna see my little boobs, ok send $$ to XYZ, it does not take a rocket scientist to know this is going on here in Japan, etc..

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@EBM sad, but its true :(. Its just a proof of how the family values have been exchanged for material posessions.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

elbuda, pita,

sorry, there's all kinds of 13 yr old prostitutes all over the world. each country may have a different version of that sadness based on the culture/ conditions in that country, but children are in danger everywhere. no need to make it a Japan thing.
