A university student was arrested on charges of theft Sunday after he stole 900,000 yen from a convenience store in Osaka's Tsurumi Ward.
According to police, the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Yuki Nishio, entered the Tsurumi Imazunaka FamilyMart just after 3 a.m. and allegedly threatened a 26-year-old employee with a knife. He demanded that the employee empty the register and the safe. There were no customers in the store at the time and the employee was unharmed.
Police were quickly alerted and found Nishio nearby about 10 minutes after the crime, carrying the knife and the cash. Nishio was quoted as saying he robbed the store because he was broke.

It seems it will be open season on conbinis in the future. Seeing as they have quadrupled in the last 10 years and are the cash only racket who prosper in the Japanese economy with McDs.... My bet is this kid got the beer muscles and went in with a mask. In this country a kid could walk into a conbini and knock it over in a few minutes with a squirt gun or make fart noises and demand all the cash- they are nearly deserted at 3am on a Sunday night, especially when a billion people were tuned into a TV last night. Gee 900,000 ($10K) could cover his tuition last I checked. Must admit the total confessions are classic and much appreciated. New Family Mart next to my place has 15 CCTV cams inside (OSAKA). Amazing.

The American "combini" king - 7-Eleven - learned a while back that they were going to have a high incidence of crime. They went to timed-drop safes. You can get the money out, but only $20 every minute. Can you see a robber hanging around long enough to even get $100 that way?
