Gambling and corruption go hand in hand no matter where you go. Live with it if you want casinos.

Yes, but this is an article specifically about corruption in the LDP in Japan!and potential casinos in Japan. This means comments on this thread will be directly related to those issues.

Please keep that in mind before posting sweeping generalizations about how an article “conclusively demonstrates the Japan haters club incorrect.”

"Live with it if you want casinos."

I do not want casinos!

Pachinko is a national obsession though the number of players is declining as younger generations prefer to play games on their mobile phones.

Havent visited a pachinko parlor recently have you? They do both!

....widening a scandal that could undermine government efforts to develop casinos.

or eliminate the competition.

Why are so many people against the construction of three casinos, when there are so many damn pachinko parlors, horse racing parlors, boat racing venues, bicycle racing venues, lottery booths scattered around Japan. It is all gambling! I say build the casinos, maybe they will build a few decent resorts that people can go and enjoy, get money out of gamblers from Southeast Asia. Maybe I'm being naive, but I really don't see any difference.

MarkX,

I agree entirely.

Seems very odd that so many are against gambling and casinos when there are pachinko joints all over the shop.

NHK said its accounts were being scrutinized for any transactions involving Akimoto, who in the past served as a consultant for a firm that had dealings with the pachinko operator

So why limit the probe to transactions only with Akimoto? If they believe the company has been ahem *influencing *ahem politicians, surely any transaction or series of transactions with politicians past or present would surely be of interest?

Or are they afraid of what else they might uncover?

The casinos aren't even built yet and already too much trouble.

I like casinos and hate Pachinko parlors, the 24 hours of clean/clear and safe with securities of a palace image and an unhealthy smoky tiny space of too much noise...Corruption sounds where it sound, and not sound when the law is upper the power of the legislative one, not only of this Japan of Abe but all the linkages around him. "Sakura family" is a good example, also a tendency of a country going to poverty creates tricky back-up from those main politicians governing Japan.

I'm all for uncovering corruption and holding people to account, but if the authorities are saying a 3m Yen payment to a politician acting as a 'consultant' is illegal, then the authorities have a hell of a lot of work to do. I presume there are dozens of other investigations already in operation.

All these corruption scandals says a lot about our dear leader. Can't we have just 1 clean scandal-free program..please.

I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

Any posters here want to see the deleterious effects of the casino in Asia only need to look at Macau and Shinoukville for a start...

Yes there is gambling already in Japan and it's another one of those laws that has sooo many loopholes. But a Casino Resort Complex brings in the big players, way bigger than the authorities can control, eg Politicians on the take, no problem for those on the level of crime that centres on a Casino Resort Complex. Police, media, local bodies. It's a disaster for a country already ranked very low on current corruption listings. Up untill now it's been an internal matter that has its own rules, but inviting the big boys in means playing by their rules and Japan is a century away from being anywhere near coping legally, let alone being able to enforce, investigate or even recognise what's going to happen.

Absolute disaster just for tax dollars that really could have gained by cutting from the bloated Government spending.

I read the headline and it didn’t even raise an eyebrow. It did raise a little chuckle though. How could anybody be surprised the most corrupt bunch of cronies in the world have already started bribing and fiddling books in the new casinos plan?

Casinos have great restaurants, live shows, Beautiful and comfortable hotels also. That's why you go there for the ambiance. Then in between take a seat and play a little Black Jack.
