Poor cops obviously brought guns to a knife fight.

He was found to be carrying three fruit knives and two box cutters... No metal detector had been used at the court

Why?

If the two police officers had been professional martial artists they would have beaten the attacker altogether. I hear policemen have been training martial arts. But it sounds like it didn't work this time around. Always be alert and careful.

The nutters are everywhere; I pass that building most days.

There's plenty to criticise about the Japanese justice system, but stabbing people won't achieve anything.

You can bet they start searching defendants from now on though. "Hindsight is 20/20."

WOW!!

They are busy including it in the manual as one is not allowed to use their discretion.

Hang on - because he was on bail he didn't have a security check? Surely a defendant should be more likely to be checked?

Why would they? Has this happened before and/or with any regularity?

Prudence. While Japan is still one of the safest countries on the planet, the overall safety has been in decline. As the wealth gap widens and fewer people feel financially secure, the crime rate will increase. (I have no doubt that you already know this.)

Additionally, defendants tend to be less emotionally stable than non-defendants.

How about introducing security screening at all court buildings? They can be an emotional place for people?

Duty of care and all that?

Sorry, but that is nonsense. There is no martial art that can prevent a surprise attack with a knife. Go watch some CCTV footage of such incidents.... typically it happens before you realize what is happening.

Charles:

Are you really claiming that a defendant is not under more stress than a non-defendant?

As for nothing burger, I take mine without cheese.

Agree with WilliiB, 1st time you will know that he has a knife is when you get sliced or stabbed.

Professionak MA is someone that makes a living using MA(teaches, performs, etc), not the definition of a Cop.

Forger what you see in Movies, etc.

They are called actors for a reason.

Participants in knife fights whether willing or unwilling, always get cut, no matter how good they are at martial arts. Look at some escrima/kali videos on youtube if you have the stomach to handle it.
