The approximately 8 million yen in question was allegedly spent over five years from 2015

thats 1.6 miilion yen a year. What a joke.

This issue is like the MP who got busted for handing out fans to voters.

What !?

The government misspending our tax money !?

I don’t believe it !

8 million yen, ( alleged ) miss use of funds, possibly violation of the political funds control law, right, send the police around to Abe sans house, arrest him, detain him, and question him, until he confesses, sorry until he voluntary tells the truth.

8 million yen spent on dinner functions held for supporters during his time as leader, a possible violation of the political funds control law

No doubt it is illegal, but on the other hand on the scale of national politics it is peanuts, a rounding error.

Abe's office may have illegally spent millions of yen

Parties, bribes, electronics, bribes, pocky, bribes, I'm sure there are many more to add to this list.

Snouts in the trough.

@Kazuaki

No doubt it is illegal

Thanks for saying so, matey! Agree 100%.

Very tip of the iceberg.

Abe and company have been raking in billions through loopholes/kickbacks via the Olympics, purchasing of arms, covid-19 (via Dentsu) etc.

Perleeze, can we get on with some serious news

You mean like what Arashi is doing?

Very tip of the iceberg.

Shinzo's still hiding money his grandad spirited out of Manchuria all those years ago. The tax man was after him back in 2007, it's one of the reasons he quit the first time.

He is the leader, (honorary of Nippon Kagie,) so he can spend as much money as he wants. It's so powerful underlinings kill themselves or are labeled spastic for destroying evidence that would prove his culpability. The dude is a showcase for all that's wrong with politics in Japan.

Does that mean you think Abe should be allowed to get away with it, no questions asked?

He'll voluntarily blame it all on the serfs in his office.

This fraud of 8m over 5 years isn't a patch on what they should be investigating him for.

Yeah cant wait for 1 or 2 of his "secretaries" to fall the sword for him, I mean THAT is what they are for anyway, been watching that happen now for over 30yrs non-stop!

Do you think that anybody will be arrested?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Like golfer like caddie! Trump and Abe to find prosecutors waiting for them outside the clubhouse!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

The tip of the iceberg! Others may have gotten away with it, but methinks the Two Liars, Trump and Abe will not.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Suga will protect Abe and nothing will come of it. A possible reason for Shin khuns stomach troubles. Find some scapegoat to throw under the bus.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Should have added after seeing some people’s comments. America has some remnants of democracy left though it is eroding rapidly so trump may be held accountable/ hung out to dry. Abe and Japans soft fascism, not a chance!

Pales in comparison to the land scandal, let's be real the allegedly, possibly illegal doesn't mean anything to Abe.

I would like to know more about who got what brown bags for those masks better.

8 million yen? I’m sure other government leaders spend much more than that.

"Abe's office may have illegally spent millions of yen on parties"

Politicians helping themselves to the public trough...who would have thought. /s

Banquet attendees, many of whom were voters in Abe's Yamaguchi Prefecture constituency, were charged 5,000 yen each, even though such events at the five-star hotels normally cost approximately 11,000 yen or more per head. About 800 people went to the 2019 edition.

I can guarantee that the organisers knew the actual costs per person at the time of booking. When was the last time you organised a wedding / funeral etc without knowing the catering costs . . . . . Pricing the tickets BELOW the cost price is guaranteed to create a loss. Where do they expect the money to come from to cover the shortfall?*

What this amounts to is a heavily subsidised wine and dine event for supporters. Yes, akin to buying votes/support.*

Surprised, some here think the reported 8m over 5 years is the real, it will still be conservatively low after adding zero.

Is the crime misuse of the Prime Minister's office funds (or his funds as a Diet member from Yamaguchi), or is it just the failure to submit proper forms? In other words, perhaps the politicians have accounts that are used to host constituents from their districts, as long as the expenses are vouchered and made public.

In my home country, political leaders have such accounts that are used to host VIP's and leaders in the arts and academia. And, the political leaders have broad discretion as to who qualifies to be hosted, which could translate into important constituents and donors. The only obligation is, if such funds are used, for the proper reports to be filed so the public may learn of such largesse. The "court of public opinion" is the brake that keeps most leaders from simply throwing crazy rich parties for their friends every night.

So therefore if this is simply failing to properly fill out some forms, it will eventually be done and the prosecutors will drop the matter.
