Me thinks this is just the tip of the ice-berg, this is a world wide epidemic, and it needs to stop!

Among them, 1,152 girls and 124 boys were identified through methods including image analysis.

So basically, some Joe staring at a bunch of photos?

About 90 percent of cases involving the sending of selfie nude shots involved junior high school or high school students.

And I'm guessing 90% of these pics were sent from one high school student to another.   This is not new.  I recall some years ago (pre cameras on phones)  that the trend then was for high school girls to take topless shots in photo booths for their boyfriends.

Cconfused. Was it porn or nude pictures? Without consent or with coercion makes both in this case bad, but nudity is allowed - cherubs, for example. Porn and nudity is conflated a lot nowadays.

When I hear "child porn" I don't think of high schoolers. I think they're mixing up the terminology with "underage" or "minors" to make it sound more dramatic and devious.

multiply the numbers by 100 to get some near actual figures of unreported cases.

I agree with @yubaru. The first step is to stop 15 year old bikini model magazines in combibis.

Goodluck, are they really 15 in some cases?

Hey Bugleboy, inappropriate comments there.

Investigators need to view the images to confirm they are child abuse material (a more appropriate term than ‘child porn’ JT),

The repeated use of the term pedophile in the article also seems to be incorrect, in the same manner. A pedophile is attracted to prepubescent children, those attracted to pubescent minors (11ish - 14ish) are hebephiles, and those attracted to post-pubescent minors (15ish - 18ish) are ephebophiles. It appears that most of the victims from this article were jr. high and high schoolers.

Shouldn't these be added to the total number of child abuse cases?

This is the dark underbelly of Japanese society. There is an extremely creepy, sick and perverted sexual fascination with young girls in Japanese men. You only have to be on a train to see middle aged men undressing school girls with their eyes. Add to this the uncountable amount of twisted perverts stuffing their smart phone cameras up young girls butts and the high amount of creeps copping a feel (chikan) on trains and you start to see a pattern of sexually immoral mental illness.

@Disillusioned: honestly it's not a Japanese men only thing. Sadly, all men around the world are attracted to young girls. Every woman in any Country knows it because of her own experience. When you are over 20, you get less male attention than when you are in High School or even younger.

Technically, pedophiles are attracted to feet (pedo-).

No:

Paedophiles are attracted to children (paedo-).

Both are correct.

It's a bit more than that. I don't know about in Japan, but officers in the UK in specific units are trained up to combat and prevent the use and sharing of child pornography. Officers are male and female and the stress levels in the job are quite high, so I'm told. That's a difficult job for anyone.

The thing is, nobody truly cares here. Japanese are too used to keeping their heads buried in the sand. Even if the names of these low-lifes were printed on the front pages of all newspapers, nobody wold care, nothing would change. There are no real world nor judicial repercussions to this kind of behavior in Japan.

I never said it was specific to Japan. However, this article is about the amount of child porn cases 'in Japan', which makes international comparisons irrelevant.

15? Sure. Even as young as 7 or 8. But more than the age, it’s the poses the girls are made to do that should be of concern.
