Gov't to charge Nagoya prison officers over alleged inmate abuse

They kept shouting demands like….. what demands? The press should be pushing to understand what the demands were. For better food? For speedier decisions? To have certain religious beliefs catered for? Complaints about the abuse which brought on more abuse? Racist abuse? Is Japan today just a copy and paste news site because I think some deeper understanding of the complaint’s is important. Is this a sign of racism by the guards or something more institutional racism.

22 prison guards? That’s symbolic of a systemic failure, one or two might be an abbreviation but 22. That is a failure on the department. You get your sentence, serve your time, judge doesn’t say “ and during your incarceration the guards are also going to beat, belittle and do everything they can including killing you, raping with a fire hose” I bet those 22 represents 88 or more.

I've got an idea to maybe help prevent similar cases of abuse. Charge these men and imprison them in the same prison where they abused the inmates. Just for a month or so, along with a major fine and firing. See what happens.

Most of the suspects have admitted to the allegations, saying they committed the acts because the inmates did not follow instructions and kept shouting demands.

Bet they received the same type of abuse when they were younger, at the hands of men who are similar in age to the one's who were abused.

At best being government employees theses 22 will get a very harsh talking to. Then back to work taking their frustrations out on a literal captive audience.

If they were to be found guilty!? have them serve their sentences along side the same prisoners they abused. Some people never learn until their foot is on the other side.

Yes, this is true and well documented.

Agree with Abe234, this story needs more background and detail in support of statements.

Also agree with Cricky, indicative of systemic problem but presumably that is why they are setting up an independent panel to investigate, obviously the system itself can not be trusted to root out the rotten apples and the causes of this behaviour being permitted.

The governor of the prison should be suspended with immediate effect, they either condoned this behaviour or they are incompetent and do not have a grip on their prison or wardens, either way they are not fit for purpose.

Two questions. They have alcohol in prisons or is it medicated 80% hand wash?

The inmates were men in their 40s, 50s and 60s

22 officers, all male and in their 20s and 30s, abused three inmates

No females buddy sorry to crush your fantasy.

The 22 prison guards should be imprisoned and the inmates freed to become prison guards to look after and show them how to be kind to inmates.
