Watched this on the news last night with my family... Mother in law sees the guy through the window and said 'Hmm, definitely looks chinese'. Basically my eyes rolled to the floor. Clearly this guy was off his rocket on something.

How could you eat without money? That's just rude...
AgentX
How it should be by default. Too much fear mongering and negative stereotyping of foreigners all through the J-media. Incidents like this become headline news, whereas the daily familicide barely makes a splash.
The J-media is xenophobic, at best.

The summer heat always brings out the loons. I'm glad nobody was hurt by this nutcase.
Wow! I'm sure 'shirtless' would have sufficed.

Why do you guys all assume he just "snapped" or that it was some kind of Yakuza hazing ritual. It sounds to me like a guy who's just hit rock bottom but doesn't want to kill himself. From here, he'll go to prison, and believe it or not for some that is probably a way to start back on their way up. If he was doing these kinds of things, unless he was on drugs and cranked out, he probably just saw no other way to go in life. Him calling the police indicates that to me.
sensei258
He went there with the intention of getting arrested. Just part of his initiation into the "clan" as it were
jcapan
Somehow, I picture him wearing a diaper and crying for his bottle (in prison, where all his needs will be taken care of)

I watched this this morning. He was definitely at least part Asian. He had the outlines of tattoos on both arms from the shoulder down to the elbows like those of a Yakuza newbie. And his facial expressions as the police were taking him away where are a little too over-the-top as if he was acting in my opinion. It all made me wonder if he was just trying to impress his oyaji
DNALeri
To me it looked as if he was on drugs.
Strangerland
I'm not Japanese (nor Asian) and I can shout in Japanese. Contrary to popular belief, some people who aren't Japanese actually can speaky the common tongue.
Toasted Heretic
I shouldn't laugh but have some of you never been out in a city before? People snap, the have drink on them and sometimes there's violence, sometimes there's destruction. The damage done to himself will stay for a long time. But this is the human condition. Cities can do that to you. Life can do that to you.
It could be any one of us, at any given time. Hopefully not, though.
Cricky
So cute police dodging fireworks and randomly thrown items. They had shields so saftey first. Had it been in America it would have ended in a blood bath. 200,000 thousand rounds and a perpetrator with a slight scratch.
Strangerland
That's what I figured too. He ate and drank with no money, then told them to call the cops, and caused a big scene. This sounds like a guy who is at the end of his rope, and has decided that jail is preferable to his current circumstances.
Disclaimer: Above conclusion is pure speculation.
bones
Well at least now he won’t have to worry about money and can eat prison food for free! :-/
Alex Einz
sounds like the food was crap...
Strangerland
Yeah, he looked drunk to me too.

While I mostly applaud the endless levels of courtesy you see in the overwhelming majority of police/public interactions (questioning, arrests, etc), one has to head scratch in these situations. Surround the building housing the pub? Stand off while alone with a knife? Just what are they teaching in the police academies here?
Strangerland
Whatever they're teaching, it works. The people here are generally very law abiding. And in this case, this guy was taken down without injury to him nor anyone else. It would seem you're implying that this wasn't an ideal outcome. Pray tell, how could they have done this better, and how would that lead to a better outcome than this one?

@nakanoguy
A Brit would know what a pub is. So very unlikely to make that mistake. I suspect a local, with a poorly-edited dictionary....

Unfortunately, this is the likelihood of the ''hidden'' unemployment of Japan. They cannot get jobs if they fall in the age bracket of the 'forgotten generation (unlucky people). No one wants to hire them or they are considered too old. So, the only way they can survive is to get arrested and be a ward of the state.
WA4TKG
Probably found some old magic mushrooms to put in his pasta that he didn't pay for.
Strangerland
Aren't those the same thing?
BeowulfOkami
Looks like he was trying to get arrested. Now he gets free meals and free accommodation in jail.
Do the hustle
The temperature reached 31’ in Tokyo yesterday. Summer in the city indeed!
I don’t know why so many people are speculating about drugs or alcohol. This nutcase went to the restaurant with no money. It’s obvious he intended to make a ruckus as soon as he got out of bed yesterday. Just another broken mind.
Strangerland
I don't know about drugs, but they said on the news he drank a bunch of alcohol.

i don't know you or about you but, when i am enraged i tend to curse in my native language. it is my default setting for anger, as is the case with most people. i am from a city in north america where only 52% of the population speaks English as a first language. as such, i've seen angry people of a variety of backgrounds resort to their native tongues to hurl curses, slurs and all many of poison when they feel provoked.
moreover, my present home in japan is located within 20 minutes walk of both the south korean and chinese embassies. as a result, i've witnessed some angry speech despite being unable to decipher it all.
Tokyo-Engr
Sounds like a case of a guy that just "snapped"
onewrldoneppl
should've asked her why she thought a chinese person would be shouting in japanese. it's more like that he a japanese drunk or one who is high on some sort of narcotic.
nakanoguy01
looks like they hired a brit to write at kyodo now. calling an izakaya a pub is like calling doutor a cafe.
just glad no one got hurt. usually these nut bars try to injure others instead of themselves.
hudagree
Money makes the world go around. Should’ve taken it with him & there would be no story.
smithinjapan
Strangerland: "Aren't those the same thing?"
Hitting rock bottom and snapping? No, not the same thing at all. You bump into someone on a train platform, they turn around and stab you or push you in front of a train spur of the moment through blind rage. THAT is snapping. Now, people who hit rock bottom may well snap, but that does not equate the two. Furthermore, the guy called the cops before his rampage -- he was clearly thinking about what he was doing. He didn't snap.
kurisupisu
Hot weather and stress plus alcohol....
HARRYO
OK he throw a chair and other objects out the window-got that, He also throw a Beer Server out the window
would that be a Waiter or Waitress ?? I know it's not either of the two it's just the way the story is written it could be interpreted as a Waiter or Waitress. Eating & Drinking without having any money to cover the expenses is just morally wrong, Your stealing from hard working people who are there to serve you and who at times put up with this type of nonsense. At least he wasn't naked from the waist down.
since1981
Looking at his Tats, I'd say low level Yak working his way threw the ranks and perhaps wasn't a good earner.
Strangerland
I didn't say it doesn't happen, I said it was more likely he would be tased. The police use tasers way more often than they shoot.
Remember, we are not talking about something that actually happened, we are hypothesizing about what may have happened in a different environment. Therefore we can only talk about likelihoods or possibilities. Likelihoods are based on existing information, and that information tells us that the police use tasers more often than they shoot.
Ricky Kaminski
Better to burn out than fade away ay buddy! All tatted up, probably coming down off a massive binge. Talk about overkill from the boys in blue though. How many cops does it take to change a lightbulb?
Yep, it’s gunna be a hot summer in the city.
afanofjapan
To those suggesting he was a chimpira trying to impress his superiors... If he is a Yakuza then something like this will cost him his little finger, for bringing shame to his gang. Yakuza prefer to stay low profile, avoid police confrontations.
Strangerland
I can rage better in English than Japanese, but I can comfortably rage in Japanese as well.
Goodlucktoyou
My friend has a small business. He stuggles to make ends meet for his wife and child. If some retard trashers his shop, he will be finished. These people who desire stress release should take up boxing or fishing or marathons.
Dango bong
more low-life losers wasting the time and money of normal people...
Toasted Heretic
That hot weather can set people off. Add alcohol and it's quite the combination.
Amazing how it made the news, though. Japan really is a safer place than most and incidents like this are rare.
Strangerland
This guy lost it. Threw a barrel out the window, then threw a bunch of stuff out the window. The funny thing is that he was shooting fireworks out of the window... and the izakaya was named 'hanabi no do' (something like 'fireworks cafeteria').
When they took him out, he definitely didn't look typically Japanese. he looked white, or maybe partially Asian.
If it does turn out that he was a foreigner, this is going to blow apart a lot of people's arguments that the media is racist, seeing as his race isn't even mentioned here.
