I hope the So Called "mother" and her boyfriend get the severest penalty possible.

I do not know if the boyfriend knew about the toddler situation. If he did, I agree, he belongs in handcuffs.

How would any Japanese citizen not know to take a sick person to a hospital for care?

NYC (including burrows) isn't exactly the cheapest place for anything. Many things cost 3-5x more there, especially anything where a licensed, professional, is involved, but the point is made. Thanks.

Of all the Ugly, Stupid, Appalling, Disturbing, Incomprehensible, depressing news I have read on this site, this really TOPS them all.

I just can't digest what my eyes are reading. and can't even begin to imagine the girls cry for her mother while dying. Just too much. God help us all .

I hope the So Called "mother" and her boyfriend get the severest penalty possible.

Where did you read that. You must pay the monthly Health Insurance. Normal working people and their families pay 30% of total charges for health treatment.

I only got the idea here, when people claimed that the US Health Insurance was barbaric.

"30%" of total charges for the care? So there's no limits?

Why did this woman feel she couldn't get treatment by taking her baby to a care location? Seems barbaric. I'm fairly certain it was just a stupid girl and not a failure for a hospital to treat the baby.

According to Tokyoreporter she blocked the door to the kitchen with a sofa, so the kid was locked in one room. 8 days without anything to drink....

3 ( +3 / -0 )

This makes me wanna leave work and go to my 5 year old's kindergarten just to hug him. I can't even leave my kid in the car while I go into the combini let alone leave him for 8 DAYS to go on a sex romp many prefectures away? They should do the same to her in prison.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Murder. And I hope that is what she is charged with.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What a waste.

And just to "see" some bloke.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Noa became ill several days before her death but she had no money to take her to a hospital for treatment.

But she had money to travel from Tokyo to Kagoshima and swan around for a week?

Not buying that.

Throw the book at her.

@WilliB

You’re right, “common” is a subjective word. For me if these cases happened more than once a week it’d be too common for me. However, you want stats? Almost 2,000 cases were handled by police last year. Those are just the ones where the cops were called.

But let’s not be subjective, those stats make it more than 3/day! is that common enough for you?

The better question is why aren’t you focusing on the part of my comment that proposes a constructive dialogue to help solve the issue at hand?

My blood is boiling. I’d love to be in a room with no windows with this creature. I have a 3 Year old & this story breaks my heart! hope She is in a better place and may her mum suffer for eternity for what she’s done. Scum of the earth!!!

Excuse for a mum, you mean. This is an unspeakable crime. Maybe her fellow inmates in a womens' prison will teach her a lesson. Yes, people like her are heartless and absolute scum of the earth.

RIP Little Girl. You never even really started to live a life but you're better off away from that evil wench who didn't care for you. No more neglect, pain or misery for you.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This woman must be caged forever. Mental sickness,?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Zaphod

Yes, I agree with that. Of course one case of police violence doesn't extrapolate to it happening every day in every city. You can't let yourself be tricked or emotionally swayed.

I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with though :)

But trying to have fallacious argument as "Not reporting it is not equivalent to hiding it" whereas you acknowledge JT loves stories like this, denying what international media are, i.e the same hunger for such stories.

1) Again, the number of articles read is reflective of the news that the given media chooses to report, based on their profits. They do NOT choose the number of articles based on the relative rates of that crime within the country. There is no obligation to do so, and media agencies do not do so. The number of articles read is NOT reflective of the relative rate of a given issues occurance within a given society. Any attempt to try to equate them is flawed, and does not follow basic scientific and logical principles.

2) How do you know the international media is equally hungry? What facts are you using to come to this conclusion?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

I just don't understand how this happens. I'll never understand.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Miss Oikawa

In my home country you might read of an angry ex-husband attacking the family, but not a mother callously abandoning children like this.

That only reflects on what the media chooses to report. Like the selective reports about police violence in the US, which paint a completely different picture than the actual statistics.

You would have to look at the statistics, not the press articles, to get an idea what happens in your country.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

@Strangerland

I appreciate you defend your ideas.

I know that people here as in many comment sections (good for JapanToday) can have strong opinions.

But trying to have fallacious argument as "Not reporting it is not equivalent to hiding it" whereas you acknowledge JT loves stories like this, denying what international media are, i.e the same hunger for such stories.

Be less talkative, be smart as you are sometimes and we like it.

RIP little girl.

PS: there might be such events occurring but undiscovered then...here the culprit mother admits so childishly that it is unbearable.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Why would other countries hide such news ?

Yeah why would they?

I don’t see anyone suggesting that they hide it.

Bur not reporting it is not equivalent to hiding it.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Why would other countries hide such news ?

In Europe or USA we had the stories of kidnapping and encaging teenagers for over 10 years or more. But to leave to starve for your own child. Sorry never heard of it.

There is the story of the Belgian Dutroux for 2 girls emprisoned who starved to death but they weren't his girls and because he did want to get caught at that time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Horrifying! Aside from the mother being a vile excuse for a human being, the system and society failed this poor child at every level.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

You're on a weird one. Any country in the world will report a serious murder...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Not really, the UK press, and most all over the world, like a story line this just as much as any.

What are you basing this on? I certainly hope it's not just your opinion, and is based in actual fact. Please post the links to show this is the case.

If anything happened it would be all over the news for days

Really? What are you basing this determination upon? Not just opinion, right?

as the story of baby P was back in 2008.

That's a single incident, not proof of a trend.

Its not hard to understand the media, they're quite a simplistic beast.

Exactly. They post based on what their editors think will bring in the profits. This differs by newspaper, but also by culture.

Anyone who thinks they are able to accurately judge crime trends based on the number of articles they read about in the news, and infer said crime trends as a comparison with other countries is seriously lacking in the logic category.

Which makes you have to question anything they post, as they clearly aren't intelligent enough to understand how the world works, yet have the confidence of someone who does. It's the Dunning Krueger effect.

He and the woman were divorced, but that does not mean he couldn't still be a part of child's life.

In Japan? Often mothers don't give the father access to children after divorce, regardless of whether the father is willing to be a part of the child's life.

Actually to be fair, it can happen the other way too, though the courts nearly always give custody to the mother, not the father, so the reverse case is rarely seen.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I have a few questions, one where was the father? He and the woman were divorced, but that does not mean he couldn't still be a part of child's life. Two, during the time this poor child was starving to death, none of the neighbours heard her crying? No one noticed something wrong? No one thought to call the authorities? Lastly, this 'friend' who was aware of the mother's disgusting selfish practice, never thought to report this behaviour to any authorities? Not one adult around cared about this child? Everyone was too concerned about their own life!!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I have to say I agree that actions like this do seem much more prevalent in Japan, done in this way at least. In my home country you might read of an angry ex-husband attacking the family, but not a mother callously abandoning children like this.

Or maybe it's a difference in types of stories your country reports vs. the types of stories JT reports. JT gets a lot of clicks for these types of stories, so they are more likely to post them. That doesn't indicate that there are more in Japan, only that JT finds such stories more profitable. Actual numbers of rates of said crime need to be used to determine if this trend is specifically Japanese or not. Deciding it is more prevalent based on reading more about it on JT, as so many do, exposes simplistic thinking by someone who doesn't understand how the media works.

Kakehashi told investigators that she did not expect Noa to die as she thought "it would be alright" to leave the toddler alone in their apartment.

Sounds scientific. Thank goodness you're a doctor.........................

What is it with these kinds of people?

Did they lose their intelligence somewhere?

There cannot be people this stupid..........

But then again, I guess I'm wrong.

RIP little girl, you're in a far better place now than with that miserable excuse for a person.

Do you have data to back up the claim that they are a "common occurrence in Japan", or are you just reflecting your feeling from the media coverage?

I have to say I agree that actions like this do seem much more prevalent in Japan, done in this way at least. In my home country you might read of an angry ex-husband attacking the family, but not a mother callously abandoning children like this.

Zichi, depends on the place as well, but usually children do not pay medical fees, they are covered by parents’ insurance. Not sure what happens when parents dont pay their insurance.

regarding daycare, you can stop sending your child, just fill in a form and that’s it.

As a father of three, I find this story sad beyond belief. There should really be some license for becoming a parent

1 ( +2 / -1 )

And did the boyfriend know too?

If I went on past instances that I have heard about, the boyfriend probably didn't know she had a child.

Nobody knows anybody anymore, or wants to know anyone.

That was one thing that I noticed here. A few neighbors talk and are friends with each other. However, a majority are only good for a greeting.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Of course there were no neighbors who were aware of this and could do anything to help. Nobody knows anybody anymore, or wants to know anyone.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Kakehashi initially said Noa became ill several days before her death but she had no money to take her to a hospital for treatment.

I thought money wasn't needed for health care in Japan? Isn't that true?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Same story happened last year or 2 years ago. It's beyond cruel. Got no words.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

She deserves the death penalty if and should be convicted. What a horrible way for a child or anyone else depending on help to be treated.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Why was she awarded the child after the divorce

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Oh my dog! What an absolute beast of a woman. The poor little girl died alone and starving. That beast age called momma deserves the same fate.

Hammako:

The real question is why Are child abuse cases such a common occurrence in Japan and what can be done to stop it?

Do you have data to back up the claim that they are a "common occurrence in Japan", or are you just reflecting your feeling from the media coverage?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Death penalty material, she’s the living definition of death penalty material. Make an example of her worthless life.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

There’s no question she should get life in prison. The real question is why Are child abuse cases such a common occurrence in Japan and what can be done to stop it?

Like many societal issues, the punishment is a bandaid which hopes to set an example for other possible offenders, but never does. We must treat the cause. How about educating young parents or even high school students who may end up in this situation? Just because they learn about it doesn’t mean they’ll go and do it. The subject shouldn’t be taboo if it’s a reality.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

when I say local services I include the daycare. Private or not they have a responsibility.

Pointless the daycare turning up at this stage and quoting to investigators. If a child was missing from attending for a year they should have a moral obligation to pass that info on before this happens. Private or state should have nothing to do with it

No. You're wrong. Daycare is not a mandatory service allocated to each child. They are an on-demand private service that parents use when required.

They did not turn up at this stage, offering information to police... The police went round gathering all evidence trying to find patterns of behaviour.

Its no different to the local combini saying they had not seen the girl for months.

Yes this is a horrible thing. And the 'mother' is a terrible person. But you are wrong on the daycare point. Clearly you do not have kids in Japan and have no experience of how daycare works here.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

This is just awful. I would feel terrible if I knew that kid died at home alone and I lived next door.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Unbelievable and disgusted.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The thoughts of what that precious child went through, the fear, the confusion, the physical pain...while she was all alone in that house...it makes me sick.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

How the hell nobody hear poor child criyng of hunger! At 3three year old can scream for help, even the neighbors didn't notice or hear it is incredible.Reast in peace poor soul!

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Absolute scum of the earth. The beast who did this should be sterilized, and locked away forever, if hanging is sadly not an option (it absolutely should be).

Rest in Peace to the little angel, far away from the evil person who made your life hell.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Absolutely shocking story. This simply isn’t normal behaviour, I suspect some form of mental illness may be involved. Nobody is that stupid or heartless, are they?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

murderer!

11 ( +13 / -2 )

That is beyond cruel. She should get the same when they sentence her: eight days unattended in her cell with no food or water. What a terrible person. EIGHT days! Eight hours would have been bad. Honestly, this is the first thing that has shocked me in a really long time. Just to see some guy? Tell him to come and visit you, you heartless POS. I want to choke her right now.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

@TigersTokyoDome

"And this is the problem in Japan. Lack of concern from local services."

Why would social services be involved at the daycare level? That's a private business....not a school or a city run facility.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

But also the daycare facility and the friend who knew. Charge them also. And did the boyfriend know too?

Backing up the suspicion, a friend of Kakehashi's told the police, "She had left home for several days or returned late at night, leaving her daughter unattended," an investigative source said.

I would have notified the authorities immediately.

Noa had not shown up at her daycare center for more than a year, according to the facility.

And this is the problem in Japan. Lack of concern from local services.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

This mental image is horrifying. I wish the neighbors did something or her friends.

18 ( +18 / -0 )

This is horrendous! Give me that child if you don't care, it's not a goldfish!

RIP little girl your mother will burn in hell.

13 ( +17 / -4 )

And another one. Lock her up for life... and maybe feed her once a week.
