What crimes are they commuting? My guess is overstaying visas but of course that would be boring to write about.

They count visa overstaying as a crime, which of course is a crime that Japanese cannot commit. It's a very dishonest way to scare people into thinking foreigners are dangerous.

Good article to stoke the fear of foreigners at a time when immigration is being debated as a means to combat the aging population problem. Beyond fear-mongering, this kind of news serves zero purpose.

Oh good. Perhaps now they will start putting up more warning signs about anything to do with crime in English, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese (Japanese not really necessary of course but sometimes they put it on at the bottom in smaller text just for the sake of it).

I'm all for immigration and multiculturalism but if these people are law breakers then they should be deported back to their country depending on their visa. In addition they should be blacklisted as to never be able to enter Japan again. If they are here on a permanent residency then they should face legal punishment same as Japanese citizens. Some of these people don't appreciate their life in Japan by breaking the law. Of course Japanese people also commit crime but these foreigners should not get a free pass. Do the crime then be ready to pay the price!

Nice try, but your numbers don't add up. The percentages figures don't add to 1 ( .68 + .70=1.38),. Let me help you.

First, take the total numbers of crimes 915,000 and subtract the crimes committed by foreigners which is 17006. 915,000-17006=897,994. We now have the number of crimes committed by Japanese which is 897,994 and the number of crimes committed by foreigners which is 17006.

Now let us find the percentages. First the Japanese 897/915= 98.03% of the total. Now, the foreigners 170/915=1.85. If you add both numbers and round up, they will add to 1.

The total population of Japan is 127 million, 125 miilion + 2 million foreigners in percentage terms 98% Japanese and 2% foreigners

So if you compare the crime numbers to the population numbers they are about the same. You were correct when you said"Almost the same for both communities. " But your mathematical reasoning was flawed. What is wrong with the Vietnamese? You may. Ok, let us use the same reasoning.

The total number of crimes committed by Vietnamese was 5,140 and the total number of crimes committed by foreigners 17006. Find the percentages. Vietnamese 5140/17006= 30.2% What does 30.2% mean? It means out all the crimes committed by foreigners, Vietnamese are committing 30% but they are 9% of the foreigner population.

So what does it all mean? Simple. if a crime was committed, there is 2% chance that it was committed by foreigner and if it was committed by foreigner, there is 30% chance it was committed by a Vietnamese national.

Sounds like simply a "thief". A person who uses force and/or violence is a robber/mugger.

You do realize that the same person can be charged multiple crimes and most often do. This is what can skew the numbers. As for the actual crime, we need to dive deeper to understand what they are. Stealing food is vastly different to pick stealing card, pocketing or entering people’s houses. Like wise overstaying you visa is not the same as any other crime which directly affects somebody else. I need to see a breakdown of stats to really understand what’s going on.

No one is saying that foreigners do not get punished. Well, no one apart from you.

There is much more chance of a foreigner being a crime victim of a Japanese than vice versa.

Agree. Very good post. What I would like to see are stats regarding foreign crime in Japan EXCLUDING visa overstaying. Of course, Japan Inc. will NEVER release these figures because foreign crime would be non existent.
