Takuya Kawamura was your average middle-aged working man who one day became infatuated with an acquaintance. However, he was faced with the age-old dilemma: How do you approach someone and tell them how you feel?
Of course, walking up to her, striking up a conversation, and asking her on a date was off the table, because there was a chance she would say no. What Kawamura needed was a foolproof way to make her realize that he was a good guy.
So, according to police in Gobo City, Wakayama, at about 3:30 a.m. on Nov 16, Kawamura entered a parking lot where the 31-year-old woman’s compact car rested and began cutting all of her brake lines. Why he didn’t opt for slashing her tire, breaking a taillight, or any number of less potentially lethal forms of vandalism, is unclear.
Later that morning, the object of Kawamura’s affection got into her car to go to work. She started the car, but because the brakes didn’t engage, it lurched forward slightly and bumped into a brick wall.
After realizing her brake lines had been severed, she called the police. The authorities then were able to track down the 38-year-old Kawamura using surveillance footage. According to the Gobo Police, he admitted to the destruction of property saying that it was in the name of love.
“I wanted to gain her trust,” he reportedly said, explaining that the severed brakes would put her in a predicament that he could gallantly rush into and offer assistance.

A while back, an ex-partner of mine crashed their car into mine deliberately to get my phone number and meet up. Was with them for 7 years after that meeting, so I can a little bit understand the motives, but brake lines?

Aside from the "sanity testing" reason of the guy, the interesting point in this story for me is how the woman knew her brake lines had been severed.
Most women (& men) wouldn't have a clue as to what's wrong with the car in that situation. They's just call JAF or their insurance road service.
Very few people would go on the ground and look under the car. And if they did and spotted leaking brake lines, the chances of them knowing the lines had been cut (as opposed to broken or whatever) and call the police in the first instance are pretty slim.
I like mechanically minded people.

A classic in teenage stories (manga, dorama...) is that a stupid boy damages the charinko breaks of a classmate he is in love with and goes to her rescue... That seems to be a Japanese variation of American faking to accidentally pour your cocktail on a stranger, so you politely leave the party with the person to help him/her undress, and... Crap fiction. But normally, the audience know you can't fly like superman, etc.
The car went into the wall...Probably she had the accident inside a private property, in which case she called a garagist , and he told her to call the police.

While it’s possible that this woman actually did look herself and realize the line was cut, I’d put my money on there being more to the story than is written, such as taking the car to a mechanic who told her the line was cut.
