What was a 4 year old doing walking the streets at 12:30am? She should have been at home in bed. Another question would be, was the mother drunk? Unfortunately, in Japan, these extenuating circumstances are not applicable in a road accident.

Sheeeez...She was with her mother, hardly walking the streets as far as we know, why would you hypothesis that her mother was drunk? It is as conceivable, that they had a very good reason for being where they where and no reflection on the mothers parenting.

I see speeders all the time, even big trucks, and others bolting through red lights. Its no wonder these "hit-and-run incident" are not at increasingly higher rates.

WHY, do some assume the worst about people?? Perhaps Mom was a nurse at a hospital and walking her daughter from a caretakers house. Just one reason of thousands but some want to accuse "Mom" of using poor judgement.

Well, despite fleeing the scene at least he came back quickly after. Beyond that there's very little information. He could have been speeding, but it could also have been a mom and child suddenly bolting across the road at 12:00 am in a very poorly lit area on a curved road, or just over a hill. I hope they recover.

At least the rider had half a conscience to return. A lot of these scum would just ride off into the sunset. I pray that the mother and daughter come out of this ok.

yep and those moms on those mama chariots, can be a risk to walking on the sidewalk, especially those on bikes texting etc. .

I rode in Okinawa for about six years....this, I'm sure, doesn't even BEGIN to compare to Mainland, however: I found the ONLY way to ride (ANYWHERE) is:

1) Assume NO ONE SEES you, you are INVISABLE. 2)Assume EVERYONE will do the WRONG thing, in their driving technique. 3) Assume EVRY kid you see will RUN OUT in FRONT of your motorcycle.

Then, and ONLY then, can you expect to ride without incident....even THEN, the ONE time I had somthing happen, a kid about this same age, broke away from her mom's hand, did an ABOUT Face, and came RUNNING full speed, right down the same side walk she was walking UP, with her mom...she ran RIGHT in front of the motorcycle, I had already began to SLAM on both brakes, and literally THROW the motorcycle on the ground, this is the ONLY reason her kid is still alive today...needless to say, mom was saying: Gomen' nasai, gomen nasai...I thought nothing of it, and went on my way. "Safety Driver" people, "Safety Driver".

I sometimes take my young kids for walks when they can't sleep at night. It helps them relax and fall asleep. I can imagine a number of innocent reasons why this mother and daughter could have been out walking that late.

Are you suggesting that the woman was, in fact, attempting suicide by motor vehicle?

I am just repeating what they said at the news. There may be several reasons why somebody would crouch in the middle of a national road at night while holding a baby, and suicide is one of them. Let's hope the woman (and especially the poor girl) will have the chance to tell the reason herself

May we stop insinuating that the mother was drunk, she was apparently holding her daughter in her arms, carrying her. Possible reason could be that she rushed her daughter to a hospital,or second they came from a party or the mother worked late and she picked up her daughter from parent's/friend's house. Obviously lacking info on this article. I live in Yokosuka and it beat the heck out of my mind, why those crazy motorcyclist who drives so fast and pull out their swaying between two lanes don't get caught.
