Police in Kashiba, Nara Prefecture, said Sunday they have arrested a 68-year-old woman after the body of her 90-year-old mother was found in their house.

According to police, Yukimi Yamamura was charged with abandoning the body of her mother Chiyoko, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police said that on Feb 26, Yamamura phoned her younger brother, who lives in another prefecture, and told him that their mother had collapsed and that she was going to call an ambulance. But she did not do so.

Chiyoko's body was found by her son when he visited the house on Saturday. He found her lying in the hallway, covered with a blanket.

Yamamura told police that when her mother collapsed, she panicked and didn't know what to do, so she just covered the body.

So, an elderly woman is overwhelmed by the death of her mother, for whom she has being caring, presumably single-handed, and doesn't call the authorities. Her brother, however, doesn't show up until over a week later (if the "Saturday" of the article refers to March 5th, not Feb. 27th) which would have been well past the funeral. What the hell was his deal? There are no criminals here, just lack of support and assistance for those in need.

Given that some Japanese media say no noticeable injuries on the body, the panicked suspect may have simply ended up leaving the body in the hallway. So it makes sense that for now, the police are questioning her on suspicion of abandoning her mother's body. Let's monitor the development of the police investigation.

How can she abandon the body when she is still living with it? And she did cover it up.
