Like other commenters have said, the infant, at 25 weeks would have had little chance of survival even in a hospital. The article doesn't say if it was a stillbirth or not. What I heard on tv is that she is a wealthy Thai tourist who was allowed to stay in Japan because of the global lockdowns and got knocked up from a Japanese guy.

Another sad story of desperation of some foreign nationals brought to work in Japan. Respectfully, her nationality was included in the body of story and not the focus of the headline. Well done, editors & staff.

Wow, disturbing and sad. Hard to understand her situation but what ever her reason was I hope she finds peace.

Filtering systems would of course be jammed by this small but obvious organic matter. Not a smart woman and obviously mean.

I don't care if she wanted the baby, if it was wanted or unwanted. That's beside the point. I have nothing against abortion, adoption, etc. I understand that maybe she didn't want the baby for some reason. I get that. But flushing the baby down the toilet like a piece of excrement?!? It's irrelevant whether it was alive or dead at birth. I'm a very calm person, but this type of news and behaviour weeses me off beyond belief. She could have left him somewhere like a konbini, anything would be better than what she has done.

Terrible story. But the unborn, it is really not different than an abortion. A situation like this is never good.

Sad story. Abortion might have been the best in this case but considering it costs between 10-20 0000 yen here and you need permission from the father, maybe this was just not a viable option for her.

Almost certainly a still birth. And "giving birth" is hardly what happened here. One quarter of the weight of even the low range of a normal birth and 27cm (from the previous report of this in JT) being ejected at 25 weeks, this fetus might have been barely viable even had it been 'born' in a well equipped hospital given that the placenta had, apparently, already detached and was ejected with the fetus. And for a young woman, alone in a foreign country and probably absolutely terrified, abandoned by the perhaps Japanese father, I think anyone here might find absolute panic difficult to avoid in such a stupefyingly horrific moment of looking down and seeing what was there, and 'making it go away', as her body had already done, an almost 'rational' behavior in the 'insanity' she must have experienced.

And once the lever is pulled, there is no going back. Anyone who would condemn this poor woman under the circumstances as described here would do better to reflect on their own 'Humanity'. She will not fully recover from this for a long time, if ever. And, now, the trauma of the police...I hope she is on 'suicide watch'...

At 25 weeks, there was no virtually no way that was going to be a successful birth. Even in a state of the art hospital, that is around a 50% survival rate at best. That is going to plummet to basically 0 for a home birth. Different story if this was a full-term pregnancy, but it was barely half of one.

This was basically a miscarriage that this poor woman is going to be raked over the coals for, despite probably feeling terrible already. Her identity should 100% not be published unless some actual crime was proved to be committed, which I am just not seeing.

We need to understand why she flushed the "baby" down the toilet... i hope it doesn't have anything to do with hospitals denying her ...

Why publish her name and shame her like this? One can only imagine what kind of kind of horrific circumstances have led her to this.

Perhaps the media can wait a bit till authorities confirm the body was a stillborn or not? But nope. Sensationalism is the way to report stuff.

That lady was probably panicking to be honest, if I was in the toilet when my baby came and I didn't have my phone, I'd probably be freaking out too. Not saying what she did was right or ok in any way, but it sounds less like a planned, premeditated situation than something that happened spontaneously. Hopefully she won't be charged with anything like murder, again not saying what she did was right, but it really didn't sound thought out at all. Who knows what kind of language abilities or support she has in Japan, if she even registered the pregnancy at the ward office, etc. Really crazy situation. I agree with @savethegaijin, well said.

at 25 weeks without intense NICU support a fetus is almost guaranteed not to survive. Especially born vaginally, especially born in a toilet. Of course what she did was impossibly wrong but it's not the same thing as giving birth to full term baby and abandoning it or murdering it. Pregnancy loss isn't even usually classified as a stillbirth until 26 weeks, but a miscarriage. Abandoning a corpse is probably the correct term here, but then at what point are you required to report a miscarriage? Most miscarriages occur in the first trimester and are not reported at all... left to the family to make further decisions. Again, not excusing what she did but the line should be clearly defined in these scenarios. If you go into labor that early it could go very quickly and if you don't have proper support and a good medical team, it's almost guaranteed to be a bad outcome. Not to excuse how she handled it but without more information about her situation it's hard to pass judgement.

Sweet Jesus, has she never heard of an abortion? There is never any scenario when this needs to happen. The woman is either mentally retarded or sick.

Obviously, it is a terrible and tragic story, but at this point there is barely any Information why she did it, if it was an unwanted pregnancy or - as the article mentioned - a stillborn. Keep that in mind before you recommend abortions out of the blue.
