Woman arrested after body of newborn infant found in park toilet

Police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old woman on a charge of abandoning a body after she gave birth in the toilet of a park in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward and then put the body of the dead infant in a bag.

According to police, at around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, a park maintenance worker called police and said there was blood in front of the toilet in Toyama Park and that a woman seemed to be in great pain, Fuji TV reported.

Police arrived and found the woman, bleeding. A tote bag contained the body of the newborn girl.

The woman, who was identified as Yui Yamamoto, had no fixed address and was unemployed, police said. She was quoted by police as saying she put the body of her dead baby daughter in the bag because she didn't want anyone to see what had happened.

Then they wonder why the birth rate is falling so rapidly. It's a sad sad situation. An unemployed nomad whom I'm positive did not impregnate herself.

I don't know the circumstances under which the child died, but I can't help but question the crime statistics in japan. What constitutes a crime from their point of view? Every day a child dies under questionable circumstances. Do they correctly file these deaths?

Regardless of the situation or circumstances she has murdered a child, for which there are no excuses and she should be treated by the authorities accordingly.

Just a little point for all you questioning if the baby was born alive or not. All 'full-term' babies are born alive, but unless the airway is cleared the baby will suffocate and die within two or three minutes of birth. Still-born babies rarely go full-term and most often involve complications for the mother. It is disgusting to think this baby was born on a public toilet floor and the mother would have watched it die. As I said before, it is sad that she felt this was the solution to her unwanted pregnancy. We only get to express our disgust of this, but she has to live with watching the baby die.

Stangerland, you put it right. Too many comments on JT are hyperbole and, I think, a printed form of selfies. Pity the girl, for crying out loud, and quit the crude cacaphony of mindless blame!

Wow, all sorts of unjustified speculation in this thread:

1) We don't know how she got pregnant. All comments towards prostitution, irresponsible sex, or rape, are unjustified.

2) We don't know how the baby died. It may have been stillborn, she may have killed it. Criticizing her for either of these is unjustified.

3) We don't know her level of knowledge of available services. The girl was homeless and pregnant. If there were services such as a free hospital visit available, she may very well not have known that. So to criticize her for not using these services is unjustified.

4) We don't know her level of intelligence/sanity. She was homeless - that shows either a lack of resources/creativity, or some mental illness issues. Either of these could very well contribute to bad decisions.

In part, we don't really know enough about any of it to condemn this girl. She may have been a handicapped schizophrenic who was raped, and didn't receive the support needed to know what to do, for all we know.

So how is this abandoning the baby if she was still there bleeding? She must have just given birth with bag in hand.

Can a pregnant homeless woman without a health insurance card/resident card/My Number (!) go to any hospital and give birth? Doesn't one need to show some sort of I.D. to the city hall to receive assistance? I don't claim to know Yui Yamamoto. Perhaps she has some proof of identity and knew she could safely deliver her baby at a hospital and that city hall would have helped her.

as for "going to a hospital", would you have footed the bill for her

@ Viking - City hall would pay for the medical bills, and give her support for the child, so finances (or lack thereof) are not an excuse. So she could have gone to any hospital instead of giving birth in a toilet.

What boorish comments. first: she was just as likely raped second: it was just as likely to be still born.

Wow, you really know how to sling it. How she conceived is not an issue. Less than 2% of unwanted pregnancies (in the U.S. anyway) are the result of rape (I did my college thesis on why women have abortions), so her being pregnant because she was "likely raped" is very unlikely, and she wouldn't know it was still born until after the birth, so why give birth in a toilet when she could have done it in a hospital without paying?

Heaven knows how this woman found herself in dire straits, but it seems pretty obvious to me that the woman's desperation forced her into prostitution. That almost certainly stillborn kid was probably the result of one of the tricks she turned.

If she felt that the world didn't give a s#it about her, then this outcome cannot come as a surprise.

I hope she gets the help she needs.

It's sad that she engaged in behavior that resulted in an unwanted child, disregarding the potential consequences of her actions It's sad that she ended a defenseless human life because it was inconvenient for her

@sensei258

It's sad that this woman felt this was the only thing she could do.

's sad that she chose murder, treating a baby like trash, instead of going to a hospital,

The article doesn't say anything about her "killing" the infant, it could have been stillborn - and as for "going to a hospital", would you have footed the bill for her ???

Even if a pregnant woman is poor, homeless, jobless, and had no health insurance, the hospitals in Japan wouldn't turn her away. But they would send the bill to the local city hall, from where also the woman would later get financial support for her growing child. So you tell me why she went to a toilet to give birth, and don't give me that "maybe she didn't know she was pregnant" BS.

Is there more to this story? Did she actually murder the baby or was it still born? With no job and no home she could have been malnourished and the baby died. We shouldn't assume she killed it after giving birth?? Unless I'm missing something here we should only assume that she should have gone to a hospital or police with the dead baby she delivered!!??

No friends, no family, , no job, no address, no social services, no support! It's sad that this woman felt this was the only thing she could do.

How sad. Do we really need to know this woman's name?

then put the body of the dead infant in a bag. How do we know it was dead when she put it in the bag?

no fixed address and was unemployed Now there's a big surprise.
