Police in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, have arrested a 48-year-old woman after the mummified remains of her mother were found in her apartment.

According to police, Chikako Nishimura was charged with illegal abandonment of a corpse after the remains of her mother were found on Jan 6. NTV quoted police as saying the woman, who was in her 70s, had apparently died in March last year.

Police said Nishimura had been living with her mother in the apartment and had been receiving social welfare checks in her mother's name. In December, city officials learned that Nishimura's mother had not been seen in some time. On Jan 6, social welfare officers visited the apartment and discovered the mother's body completely mummified and wrapped up in a futon inside a closet, NTV reported.

Nishimura told police that her mother died last March of 2014 and that she had kept her body in the house since that time.

Odd, the one thing she didn't do is abandon the corpse.

No problem giving up the mummy, but couldn't give up the money.

Hard times for some people? Was the daughter employed or suffering from some mental disorder? Was she just plain greedy? Again, a story with little background detail. However, a terrible situation whatever the reason.

This is more common it seems than not here as there have been numerous cases where elderly people have died and their children have continued to collect the welfare benefits long after they should have stopped.

So when did she illegally abandon the corpse?

The age old adage ''no money no honey'' has become '' no mummy no money''.
