Police have arrested a 34-year-old unemployed woman on charges of abandoning the bodies of five babies after their remains were found in her home in Yawatahama, Ehime Prefecture.
According to police, Emi Wakabayashi was arrested on July 14 for abandoning the body of a newborn child in a closet at her home, Fuji TV reported Tuesday. Police made the discovery after they were alerted that Wakabayashi who had been seen in the neighborhood while she was pregnant, no longer appeared to be pregnant.
Following her arrest, police questioned Wakabayashi about her actions and decided to return to her home to search the premises. Officers found the skeletal remains of four other infants in nylon bags at a furniture disposal site outside her apartment building.
Wakabayashi was quoted by police as saying she had been disposing of newborn babies since 2006 and that she had killed one before disposing of its body.
Forensics teams are analyzing DNA samples from the remains of the five deceased children to confirm whether they are all Wakabayashi's. Police said she lives with her father, younger brother and eldest son, but gave no information on who fathered the five children.© Japan Todsay
