Police in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, said Tuesday they have arrested an unemployed 24-year-old woman on suspicion of attempted murder after she tried to suffocate her 11-month-old son.
According to police, Sachi Sato pressed her son's face down against a blanket at their apartment at around 12:20 a.m. on Monday, Fuji TV reported. Police said Sato’s husband told them the boy was alright when he and his wife went to bed on Sunday night.
Sato’s husband noticed that the child was unconscious when he got up at around 6:30 a.m. Monday and called 119. The baby temporarily went into cardiopulmonary arrest but managed to regain spontaneous breathing after being tended to by ambulance personnel. He was taken to hospital where doctors said he may have suffered brain damage.
Police said Sato, who tried to commit suicide on Nov 18, was taken to hospital that day but returned home. They said she has admitted to trying to kill her baby and quoted her as saying she was tired of child-rearing and wanted to be “free of my responsibility.”© Japan Today
