Police on Saturday arrested a 77-year-old woman on suspicion of killing her 72-year-old bedridden husband at their home in Noda, Chiba Prefecture.

According to police, the woman, identified as Hideko Uchino, stabbed her husband Haruhiko in the chest and stomach as he slept at around 5 a.m. Saturday, TV Asahi reported.

Hideko and her husband lived with three family members. One of them called police at 5:20 a.m. Haruhiko was taken to hospital where he died two hours later, police said.

Hideko was quoted by police as saying her husband had been bedridden for many years and she had become mentally and physically worn out from looking after him.

but she was maybe the only one to take care of her bedridden husband ? As has been mentioned before, there is not enough help in Japan for bedridden people - or for "mental patients" or even for small children

This incident is just the tip of the iceberg. There must be a vast number of people in Japan with invalid elderly parents or spouses at home that require care-givers and constant attention. One must be a Bodhisattva in training to be so self-less as to put the needs of others above their own. May God help those who are trying to do the right thing.

With a little foresight, she could have gotten away with it by stuffing a bit of mochi down his throat...

It's sad either way you look at it, but what's the solution??

She will have day care , free meals , free accommodation , no work for the rest of her life ...

And deserve it. She worked hard.

I took care of my ill husband for 13 years and I had plenty of help. I had an excellent care manager who put a great team together for me and it was all paid for by the kaigo system the government has in place. No excuse to kill an ill husband/wife....what happened " to death do us part"

I wonder if it was a surprise to him, or not?

Japanese government must provision to provide free medical treatment to those families who can not afford to continue expensive medical treatment in Japan. This will go a long way in containing the above incidents in the society.

This is beyond heart-breaking >___<

My heart breaks for the family, life must've been tough for the bedridden husband AND the family that took care of him. By no means am I saying that what the wife did was right, but it can be extremely difficult looking after someone who can't walk, change, bathe, go to the bathroom, or eat on their own--you feel chained to the house because someone always needs to be home supervising. Physically taking care of them is quite a chore on its own, but it isn't the full equation-supporting them mentally is also incredibly hard. I grew up with a disabled person under the same roof and at times I got frustrated, as did everyone else in the house. I would often hear crying, calling out for help, and other things at any time--its enough to make anyone depressed. What the wife did was horribly wrong, and no matter what way it is laid out, murder is murder, yet I can't help but feel bad for her in a way too. I hope that the husband is at peace now, and that the others in the house are recovering too. My thoughts are with them.

jeank: I know someone looking into Kaigo now but I believe that the person has to be totally free of any tubes. Any more info for me to pass on?

Excuses...There's not one! If she was so tired of taking care of him, couldn't she have at least helped him die peacefully, rather than bludgeoning him to death? You know he had to feel that mess, and you know it couldn't have been pleasant.

Agreed! Stabbing the guy to death does make one question what their relationship had been like! I think I will be a little more thoughtful to my wife from now on and maybe I will get the pillow treatment or thrown into the car and have a garden hose attached from the exhaust, back in through a window. I will even start the car for my her and place my finger prints all over everything so it looks like a suicide so she doesn't face any legal challenges. I would just ask that she play my favorite songs while I fall permanently asleep and all would be forgiven!

Point is be nice to one another and you won't get stabbed in the back as you sleep (or chest and stomach as per this case)

Sadly incidents like these conitnue to occur all around us!! Can't help wondering if families like these are far too ashame in asking for kaigo system assitance!!

I would sympathize if this were a mercy killing but it sounds more like she was tired of taking care of him.. sad situation but it's still murder and she should go to prison for the rest of her life.
