Police in Osaka have arrested an 85-year-old woman on suspicion of killing her 81-year-old husband.
According to police, Michiko Otsuki strangled her husband Yuji with a neck tie at their apartment in Asahi Ward just after noon on Saturday. The body was found by the couple's visiting oldest son who called police. Otsuki was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead.
The woman was quoted by police as saying she was worn out from caring for her husband, Fuji TV reported.
Neighbors said Yuji suffered from dementia.

I feel like I hear this excuse just as much as the other one (y'all kw the one I'm talking about) There should be more easily accessible help in Japan for cases where the old is taking care of the old. Remember the old man who walked in front of a train? Similar situation here. My heart goes out to the families.

Well, so much for the initiative to give more support to the epidemic of dementia and Alzheimer's sufferers. I totally understand the mindset of these people who kill their ailing souses after years of being full time caters although, I don't condone murder as a solution. It must be extremely frustrating being a full time carer with no support. This woman was in her mid-80's and should have been receiving care for herself, not caring for another. In a country that touts itself as having respect for the elderly the reality seems to be much different.

Cougars eh? Dementia really takes a toll on caregivers. Being 85 and the primary caregiver I can understand her feelings. Perhaps some of these part timers in society could be given full time jobs taking better psychological care of homebound caregivers.

I cared 2 aged parents for 4 years and saw myself changing. Now they are gone and I am full of regrets. Their last days should have been serene and more humane. Damn Japanese government taking advantage of the old and the young while funding enormous white elephant projects. Wait until you guys get old and feeble. Damn Japanese leaders for their unhumanitarian ways to the sick and the weak.

... and there you go again, painting the whole country with the same brush based on what you see in the news. You do realize that horror stories like this make it to the news for one of two reasons: it's a RARE case that's newsworthy, or it's an epidemic and the public would want to know about it. I seriously doubt this is an epidemic.
