So wrong that she thought she couldn't tell anyone. I am glad the baby was okay.

I have a 3 year old boy and a 9 month old girl. They have become the motivation behind everything I do. It is extremely disturbing to me how someone can just literally throw their newborn down the toilet like a turd. It boggles the mind. As gogogo said, the one good thing about all this is that the baby is ok.

Clearly there is no decent support for unmarried pregnant women in Japan and clearly no decent sex education.

"I couldn't raise the child on my own, and I hadn't told my parents about the pregnancy,"

Yeah, so just dump the baby in a toilet at your local 7/11. Why does this happen so often in Japan? What is the mindset that makes these women think dumping the baby in a toilet is a viable solution? It's a human baby FFS! It's not an onigiri wrapper!

Don't mind my 12 inch bulge coming from my belly mum and dad, completely normal, nothing to see here. Morning sickness? I'm just eating too much.

There is nothing to say she lived with her parents.

Ots very sad that so many many young women feel this is there only option. It’s also sad that they think this is acceptable.

What a tragedy. Being by myself since I was 18 I feel like the luckiest man in this world just for being treated like a son by my in-laws, I can see how okaasan is so happy every single day when we gather at the dinner table. 3 generations (or 4 during Christmas seasons) under the same roof, wished the whole world could enjoy this family happiness. All the luck for the baby.

@ mike, one of my friends was a paramedic, has told me of several cases where teenagers have not noticed that they were pregnant and didn't have a prominent tummy bump, or show another type of indicator, so yes it is conceivable that you don't know that your pregnant. But as for leaving it behind in a toilet bowl, that is total bang out of order and totally inexcusable, the baby could have very easily died through drowning, hypothermia , etc its a shame as I am sure that there is a couple out there in Japan how can't have a child, would give there right arm to adopt a baby.

So she has a stomachache and asks parents to stop to go to the restroom. So she delivers a baby then gets back in the car and goes home without any eyebrows being raised til later? My wife said she could barely move after delivering our babies so it is amazing how she was able to just hop back in the car.

some women find out about their pregnancy when they give birth.

What an incredibly ridiculous statement. How could a woman carry a baby in the womb through gestation and not know she is pregnant...or at least not realize that something strange is going on? A woman wouldn't notice not having a menstrual cycle for nine months, and wouldn't ever feel the baby moving/kicking? I don't think so. I agree that it is sad that she didn't feel like she had any other option, but she had several several months of pregnancy to come up with a plan. Let's not forget, the baby is the victim here, not the 24 year-old child who abandoned the baby in a toilet.

I'm glad she got arrested. I feel sorry for her parents. That's great that the baby is pulling through. I will continue to pray (for the baby). No one deserves this treatment.

I thought abortion was completely legal in Japan. It seems like that would have been a valid choice for this woman. Certainly less chance of the pregnancy being discovered that way.

But, even if that wasn't something she was comfortable with, how about going through a medically safe birth and surrendering the baby for adoption?

People are weird.

If covienence stores start closing at night, this could of been very worse. She could of had it in a sewage drain. Luckily the convince store staff found it and saved its life.

Yes, it is illegal, but it is also quite expensive. In many cases it is prohibitively expensive. The operation can be done for around ¥150,000, but most places charge much more, especially if extended care is needed.

What possible justification or good can come from naming the young woman? If it’s to shame her, shouldn’t the gentleman too be made to suffer the ignominy?

3rd wealthiest developed nation in the world and you have people doing that. Why? Same reason they'd rather abort children rather than give up their selfish time. very selfish mindset.

Claims the statement is incredibly ridiculous, then goes on to question something science has already shown happens.

Some women are fat enough that the weight gain from a pregnancy is not noticeable. Missing menstrual cycles is something that happens to many women, and some women never have any regularity. I dated a girl who sometimes got two in a month, and sometimes didn't get one for 3-4 months. And feeling the baby kicking - if they don't know that feeling, it can be attributed to other things.

There isn't any ambiguity on this situation - this does happen. All there is are people who want to disparage these women, so they try to pretend they know something that they don't.

Good to know the baby is stable condition.

Don't you think it's an unbelievable story "I hadn't told my parents about the pregnancy" ???

Do you mean your parents lost they visibility???

An excellent point. BTW, the article says it was a baby girl. Maybe we should use the pronoun her instead of it..

Many pregnancies show little presentation and some women find out about their pregnancy when they give birth. This is a very sad state of affairs and I wonder how much the moralists condemning her contribute to a climate where unmarried mothers fear not just the economic burden of a child but the social stigma which comes with it. Y'all make me sick.
