Police in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, have arrested a 54-year-old unemployed woman on suspicion of arson after two homes were engulfed in flames earlier this month.

According to police, the body of a woman, the mother of the suspect, Yuko Watanabe, was found in her house which was destroyed by the fire, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police said the fire started at around 5 a.m. on July 7 in the wooden house that Watanabe was renting with her mother. The blaze spread to the unoccupied residence next door.

Watanabe was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. After the remains of her mother were identified, she was arrested on Monday following her recovery.

Police are investigating the motive behind the deadly fire.

We could equally assume she sacrificed a career to be a full-time carer.

That's true. It's unfair to judge the situation on the information provided in the article. Elderly couples killing their own spouses after years of single handedly supporting their partners is also a common occurence.

But whether it's children who failed to leave the nest and develop the proper life skills required in adult life or caregivers shouldering the entire burden without any proper assistance it seems to be a major social issue in Japan that neither the government or the media are willing to tackle or even acknowledge.

I'm not without sympathy for these people but more needs to be done to prevent these sorts of incidents.

Thanks, @Caphuchin.

Sad truth is, few give a damn about individual needs. Just keep slavishly doing what's 'appropriate.'

That is dark.
