Police in Sapporo on Wednesday arrested a 30-year-old woman on suspicion of killing a man with whom she was having a relationship.

According to police, Aina Tachibana called 110 at around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday and said she had stabbed her boyfriend, Fuji TV reported. Police went to the apartment in Kiyota Ward and found the body of a man in his 50s, who had been stabbed in the chest. Police said Tachibana and the victim had been living together.

Police said that Tachibana appeared to be mentally unstable and quoted her as saying that she had been beaten by drunken men in the past.

a 30-year-old woman... a man in his 50s

I am not sure I agree with the use of the term "boyfriend" in cases like this. He was not a "boy" and he obviously was not a "friend" either...

It makes more sense when you realize that the word 'boyfriend' means 'a male with which one is romantically involved'.

You'll see a lot of married couples with big age disparities in Hachioji. Older, financially secure Japanese men will often marry (most often Filipinas) women young enough to be their daughter or even granddaughter. They get the attention they seek, and the women get financial security and immigration status.

The woman suspect may have been having a drunkphobia. And the man in his 50s was presumably drunk when being killed. RIP.

Tachibana appeared to be mentally unstable

I don't think that being "romantically involved" means stabbing someone in the chest and murdering them. The facts seem to be that she was living was someone whom she disliked intensely and wanted to see dead.

Does the truth hurt?

It appears she has already promoted two defence strategies... the mentally incompetent and the beaten wife/girlfriend scenario, the latter of which has proved very effective in many domestic murder cases.

"the beaten wife/girlfriend scenario"

That would be true if she was claiming that she stabbed the man in self-defence because her life was in danger. If that were the case she would walk, and rightly so.

Unfortunately, she is apparently claiming that it was an act of revenge, and that's not the same thing...

No, it doesn't mean that, but regardless, it has happened countless times throughout history that people who are romantically involved have stabbed their partner.

She shouldn't get into any trouble if she tried to defend herself.
