Woman arrested over murder of newborn son

Police in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, have arrested a 32-year-old woman on suspicion of killing her newborn son by leaving his body in a forest.

According to police, Yuka Tateno, a part-time bar worker, gave birth in early April, Kyodo News reported. Police said she wrapped the infant in a towel and took him to a nearby bamboo forest where she left him. The baby’s body was found on April 13 by a man picking bamboo sprouts.

Police said an analysis of street surveillance camera footage led them to Tateno and a DNA test proved she was the mother of the baby.

Police said Tateno has admitted to the charge. No information was released on who the baby's father was.

This is beyond horrible. Leaving a newborn to succumb to the elements as well as hunger and exposure.

Whatever problems she would have had with caring for and raising the child killing it was not the answer. She could have had it adopted.

Horrible. While one mother hopelessly waited to see if her dearly loved daughter would be found in a forest,

another abandoned her newborn.

Disgusting, even animals don't do this.

its sad to see that someone considers newborn baby as "obstacle" in "successful life" of sex worker...feel sorry about deceased kid and zero sympathy for his so called "mother"

Again. Poor baby.

This type of news is horribly frequent.

I do not think that all these pregnancies are related to sex workers (so, persons that are more exposed to unwanted pregnancy).

What are the reasons? I think a fatal mix of problems in Japanese society: lack of mental-health support, lack of support for women and single mothers, lack of awareness about sexual education, lack of moral values, lack of money, and lack of stable work.

Being Japan an advanced and developed country, being young Japanese literally overexposed to sexual themes (Hentai, sexualized young idols…..), and since in Japanese religion there are no moral stigmas about contraception, I expected that contraception and sexual education were well-established in the society and especially in the young generations. Instead, the more I live in Japan and I know about young Japanese, I am more and more shocked by the unawareness of young Japanese about these themes.

Don't get me wrong; what she did was awful but it seems to be happening every week - perhaps it's time to take a step back and look at the society as a whole.

Other forms of birth control such as the morning after pill are available only through visitation of a clinic and oral contraceptives, which were legalized in 1999, are not covered by Japanese Health Insurance. (Wikipedia)

Room for / necessity for improvement?

Also rather tell-tale:

In 1999, low dose forms of the pill were approved by the Clinic of Japan Family Planning Association, coinciding with the acceptance of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.[1] (Wikipedia)

I wonder who's really in charge of a woman's body.

Wow didn't we read another story about mother's killing their newborns. Totally selfish, being that she was a part time worker and worked at the bar, I wonder how many drinks she had and with how many men so perhaps she doesn't know who the father is. Like I said before easy to get in hard to get out!

Can't imagine what the baby went through after being abandoned.

I am no expert but this is turning into a social issue. Way too many instances of terrible acts like this one are happening.

What a woman does with her pregnancy is nobody's business but hers alone, women like this one have no business being pregnant.

The baby is in a better place. RIP little one.

Actually....they do. It happens in the animal world as well
