neverknow2-- You're right. There's something vaguely disturbing about it. Though I suppose it's no different from other forms of male entertainment, this just doesn't involve sex or stripping. These kinds of jobs really say something about the people that come up with them... And I'm not so sure it's positive.

From the 4 people I know that have been stalked here the police do very little. 3 of my friends said they wouldn't go to the police office to report it, since by default nothing will be done. After some convincing on my end they went, but the police did practically nothing. They even wanted to question me, and what I worked with, instead of taking the notes of my friend.

The times I didn't go with in support (for that reason) the police didn't even bother filing a report.

I assume this is a great way to falsely present Japan as near free of crime. But articles like these makes me wonder how many more brutal murders of stalked girls (and in cases like this, other family members) there's going to take before something about this is done. Stalking seem more common here than elsewhere.

I suppose I can ignore the false claim of a low crime rate in Japan, if this image helps nurture nihonjinron or whatever the reason police don't file these cases, just as long as something is done to prevent these incidents from happening.

that's really sad. for everyone involved. poor guy just got lost in that city. not saying he isn't 100% to blame. he is... but in that city some people just don't get the chance to people normal human beings. so many people everyday, but you don't know any of them. so close to each other. yet so incredibly far away from everyone.

Speaking from experience, the J-cops do nothing about stalkers until they do something very dangerous. They don't take is seriously and in my case even asked why I didn't just give in to the girl since she was attractive. MORONS!

What this is is opportunism of the social and economic situation that women experience in Japan. It is modern media culture based around TV, animation and an increasingly objectified view of women and children that is responsible for this. It has nothing to do with Japanese culture. Just see how many outraged Japanese there are about the state of respect given to women now.

"Wrong!" Is precisely what this is. And it underlines the dumbing down of society and the expansion of materialism over individuality and self respect. Add to that a society that judges people on what bag or designer item one owns and you have a great opportunity for dirt bags to find new and inventive ways to exploit people.

This is very sad. At the age of 21 this girl can do whatever she likes to earn a good salary (and at Y700,000 per month it was good) and it wasn't like she was engaging in sexual favours or anything. Yet again the police are responsible for allowing a violent stalker to kill a girl. A new law that immediately imprisons stalkers (no waiting for a stupid arrest warrant) with a severe warning from a court judge would save a lot of female victims in Japan. At the moment these violent men are being given a green light by the authorities.

I would also argue that her job at the ear cleaning salon had nothing to do with her murder and that a nutjob like him would have ended up stalking anyone, even if they worked in a bookstore or a supermarket.

Work in an industry for freaks and you run the danger of becoming a victim of the same freaks you cater for. Clean your ears and a head massage with your head in a young chick's lap? C'mon! But we should be asking why a girl has to have some geeky guy's head in her lap to earn a decent living. Where are the opportunities for these girls to have good careers with good pay? The answer is that good careers for girls are few and far between. Not to mention that the education system here does not properly prepare you for good jobs anyway. They prepare you for the assembly line "fresh" hires of underpaid overworked young people. So no wonder many opt out for easier money.

The tragedy isn't that this poor girl worked in a strange place, the tragedy is this girl was harassed and stalked for MONTHS and nobody did anything to stop it. That is wrong.

Yes, this is a terrible tragedy but no, they were not in it equally at all. The young girl was stalked and murdered and no one deserves that no matter what their job is! Her place of employment is definitely part of the issue. Of course no one directly forced her to do this type of work but she may not have had other options to make good money. By working there, she was put at a high risk of sexual harrassment or stalking. It's very sad that this stalker wasn't stopped earlier. Two lives could have been saved.

A sad case like him would have stalked and murdered a poor girl under any circumstances. If they banned ear cleaning salons, thigh massage joints and hostess clubs overnight, these madmen would just end up going to straight massage salons or start harrassing shop girls. He is crazy alright. This kind of service is not normal. At 21 you can keep any man's head on your lap and clean his dirty years. At 41, 51, 61 it will not be the same. Having a strange man's head on your lap is asking for trouble. Only lunatics will solicit that kind of service. Normal people would find a woman who is long term! Poor girl, no one to guide her. Aweful crime and the girl and her occupation has nothing to do with causing the incident. Look, in a society like this where most grown men are incapable of having a meaningful relationship with a woman unless she is pixelated, this kind of crap is going to happen. Ehh... the woman's not at fault for doing her job. She's not at fault for spending the money she earned doing her job (and believe me... cleaning stranger's ears means she EARNED it!) Again, probably. There are other ways to clean ears that do not involve putting the customer's head in your lap. That obviously was the "hook" this business used to bring in customers. This is a society that has numerous glaring contradictions/hypocracies, and this is one. Society winks at these business establishments, knowing that they are skirting the laws, and also knowing that they are likely to attract a certain percentage of nut jobs as clients, but then hide behind hideously weak anti-stalking laws. Blaming the victim in this case is ridiculous. I don't care what your job is -- being the victim of a murderous stalker is not your fault. She could just as easily have been the checkout girl at the local combini, or the cashier at a McDonald's. He saw her, he liked her, he obsessed over her, and then -- when he couldn't have her -- he killed her. The man was deranged, and no matter how you slice it he is completely at fault. If money was not the motivation maybe, this girl would never even look at this man. I just passed by a club a few minutes ago. On most days it is empty. Today, there were three guys in the bar. Two in their twenties and a third one was older. The older guy seemed to be around 40. If that guy was in the train or a store or something, that girl would never even look at him. But here, she was 'lovingly' chatting to him. The bars near Nerima City hall are very small and cheap establishments and you can see many such scenes without a problem.

She was popular, was on tv and at 21 girls are very attractive. She could have lived today and saved her grandmother if she did not put herself at risk.
