Woman drives 7.3 kilometers with angry boyfriend on hood of car

Police in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, said Thursday they have arrested a 22-year-old woman on suspicion of attempted murder after she drove her car for 7.3 kilometers while her boyfriend clung to the hood.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. The suspect, Mai Yamada, and her 24-year-old boyfriend had been in a bar, arguing about breaking up, Fuji TV reported. Yamada went out into the parking lot, got in her car and started to drive away. But her boyfriend tried to block her and ended up on the hood.

During the next six minutes, Yamada drove 7.3 kilometers in a zig-zag manner, trying to shake her angry boyfriend off the hood.

Police said Yamada has denied any intent to kill her boyfriend. She said she stopped the car a few times but he still wouldn’t get off. After Yamada stopped the car for the last time, her boyfriend — who was not injured — called 110.

Mai Yamada, and her 24-year-old boyfriend had been in a bar, did they breathalyse her? was she over the limit?

The twists and turns off this crazy world as we motor along down the path of life.

@expat - Sounds like they really deserve one another. Maybe sentence them to life together

The most sensible comment in this thread so far.

he was the angry boyfriend, she tried to get away, he jumped on a moving car to try to prevent her escape. If he chose to stay on the car after being given several chances, the onus is on him. Her actions are completely Justified if she was in fear for her safety. If She just stopped the car, how do you know he would not jump off, smash the window, and stab her (for example).

Again, assuming things here, SHE was the ANGRY girlfriend who left him! T hey BOTH were arguing, and if you actually read the article, wait I will refresh your memory here,

Read the last line, YOU assume she feared for her safety, sounds FROM THE ARTICLE, she tried to run him over, he was blocking her from leaving and she took off towards him, she was not backing up and he ended up on the hood...HOW, we will never know.

She took off, KNOWING he was on the hood, he could have been fearful for HIS life, she just tried running him over!

MAYBE he stayed on because he was fearful for HIS life, maybe HE thought SHE was going to run him over and his safest bet was to hang on for his life! (for example)

Did she steal his car?

Anyway, it appears a woman is not allowed to escape an angry man...

Basically, the boyfriend was committing a suicidal mission, for what ?

Spend another split second pondering that question and I’m sure you will be able to figure out “what” it is that causes men to do such stupid and potentially life threatening things. Blame it on Darwin.

Anyone who thinks they can determine which it is, from the four paragraphs in this article, is kidding themselves and really is just showing their own bias.

He jumped on her car, clearly angry and he refused to get off. There's no bias here and no one is kidding themselves. Nice fail at ridicule as usual.

Just wondering how could the boy stick to the hood, a very demanding and hard job.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

She could have shut the windows and locked the doors and called the police if he was violent. She did it because she wanted to do it.

Or maybe she did it because she was worried he'd break her window and murder her.

None of us can know which, and anyone who claims they can, is simply showing their own bias, not making any claims of fact or reality.

When a female is violent it is funny. If he fell even at low speed and hit his head it would probably have killed him.

A woman in Sakai, Osaka did the same thing to her ex-husband when they were picking up or dropping off a child for visitation. The ex-wife took the car or something and the husband ended up on the hood.

Its not very funny.

If you 88 year old grandmother did it to your mother would it be a funny story?

Hard on the gas, fast on the brakes, back on the gas, problem solved!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Will this come down to "he said" vs. "she said" over the zigzagging?

"You were all over the place, trying to kill me!"

"No I wasn't. You were on the hood and I could see the road!"

Does the 7.3km she drove include the zigzagging? Could it be closer to 8 or 9km?

@Aly, I must agree. And I'll add that the comments above yours are so black and white they're equally as funny. Except for one or two that see both sides.

So other words, she got arrested for him trying to commit suicide.

I'm sorry, but I think this story is just hilarious.

If she was drunk after drinking to 3am, she can say she remember, lose her liecence for 2 years and get a suspended sentence.

Got any examples of this actually ever happening?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Opps, “can’t remember”

@ Yubaru - so quick to judge when you weren't in her shoes you don't know how violent he was or what he would have done if she just sat there she gave him chances to get off and he wouldn't

"Quick to judge" I wonder what your "quick to assume" is? She was the one being violent. She is the one that put his life in danger when she knowingly stepped on the gas. He didn't have a gun to her head.

You are making all sorts of assumptions.

Drinking until 3am and then driving home?

Or drinking until 3am then escaping with her life. None of us know.

The girl shouldn't drive when the boy on the hood, that is her fault.

What if he was violent and she was scared he may murder her? Should she obey the law and not drive with a guy on her hood, letting herself get murdered, or should she break the law and try to escape to save her life? What is the CPP stance on such situations?

4 ( +7 / -3 )

The girl shouldn't drive when the boy on the hood, that is her fault. However, the boy is simply stupid trying to stop her car, not her.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Strangerland, if the girl wanted to kill the boy, do you think that he would be able to get on the hood ?

Yes. If she drove at him, he could have jumped on the hood rather than getting run over.

They did just come from a bar, right?

Well, it depends. If she was trying to get away from a crazed boyfriend, then a drunk driving charge seems preferable to getting murdered. Of course, if she was just crazy and wanted to hurt him, then she definitely would not want to go to the police station, especially if she'd been drinking.

Insane. Dude should just leave her alone.

Or maybe she should stop being crazy. None of us here know which.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

I’ve gotta agree with others. He should be under arrest for harassment. However, she should have called the cops.

She should have driven to the nearest police station.

Or maybe she was a crazy woman who tried to run him down. As I said above, no one knows which it is, and anyone claiming they do, is simply exposing their own bias.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Hard to imagine this happening in Japan.

I can imagine it would be for people who have never spent much time in Japan - the image of Japanese can often differ from the reality. Anyone who has lived here for any period of time won't have a hard time imagining it.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

She should have driven to the nearest police station.

5 ( +11 / -6 )

Once again, judgement being passed without knowing what actually happened.

This could be a case of a crazy girl trying to kill a guy who ended up on her hood, maybe even because she drove at him, or it could be the case of a girl trying to escape from a violent enraged boyfriend who jumped on her car, and wouldn't let her go.

Anyone who thinks they can determine which it is, from the four paragraphs in this article, is kidding themselves and really is just showing their own bias.

If he jumped on the hood of a moving car then he's assuming the risk it's not like she ran him down

20 ( +21 / -1 )

So, he tries to physically prevent her from getting away from him, jumps on to the car bonnet, and decides not to let go when she stops. The threatening behaviour came from him, not her.

She said she stopped the car a few times but he still wouldn’t get off.

Bizarre. Hard to imagine this happening in Japan.

Let her go and arrest him for being stupid and not taking no for an answer

Right, jungle justice. She could have easily pulled out her phone and called the cops. Now she could be charged with attempted murder and go to jail over it.

Not the brightest light on the tree!
