A woman in her 50s jumped to her death after apparently killing her mother who was in her 80s, at their apartment in Tokyo on Wednesday.

According to police, the woman’s body was found on the ground outside the apartment building in Taito Ward at around 12:30 p.m., Kyodo News reported. She was taken to hospital where she died about 90 minutes later.

After the woman’s body was taken away, police went up to her 11th floor apartment where they found the woman’s mother lying face-up on the living room floor. She was declared dead at the scene. Police said it appeared she had been strangled to death with a cord found beside her body.

Japan's government - under the LDP - is too stingy with public money regarding social services that would help prevent people from having to care for elderly spouses, parents, and other relatives, often in isolation. The ruling party politicians have plenty of money to pay for private care for their own elderly relatives, so they don't really care about this matter - they just pay lip service to it from time to time.

Unpopular opinion I guess, but I am firmly committed to not prolonging my life if I am a burden to my spouse or child. I don't mean taking my life. I just mean not prolonging it by taking medicine to keep me going. As long as I can semi-care for myself, I will do my best to live happily and be productive.

My Japanese wife and me are caring for Mother of wife for last 2 years. She's improving in every aspect....putting on weight, eating like a horse, going on excursions with her daughter [thats my "free drinkee time }...crickey .... looks like she'll live forever, or at least past me.

Sort of not how I saw things panning out.....Pretty crowded in a 2 bedroom unit....now she's taken to moving cups and things from the usual place......is this some plan to drive me out...or worse ...insane ?

Not how I saw my twighlight years , I can tell you.....imprisoned in my own home and unable to find the beer glasses.

Well said kurisupisu.

Caring for elderly relatives is a full time, 24 hour responsibility.

The pressure is enormous and is immensely draining in many cases

I feel sympathy for people that do so without any or little backup

Not another one, what’s going on it’s makes me feel soooo sad at times.

Social services need to be improved to help with this awful incidents and maybe a helpline for hose that feel this way especially those dealing with relatives and they feel they cannot take it any longer.

My wife's grandmother was a lovely woman but when the Alzheimer's turned her into someone completely unrecognisable, she was a handful to look after - it drove my mother in-law nuts and she finally accepted our recommendation to let the professionals take care of her ... It is stressful to look after people when they start to lose their marbles ...

I'm just speculating but it could have been partly why she finally snapped

Maybe Asians as a whole, not just Japanese, should not be living with their parents or have their parents living with them like most non-Asian adults in the western world. If you had an unhappy childhood why would you want to extend that into adulthood with your parents?

I mean, seems better than the trend of killing innocent strangers in mass like in America.

No, no, it's not.

I am not sure but it seems to me that in Japan killing family members are more than outsider compared with the other countries

Why? Because you read about it more? You read about it more because murders in general are fewer in Japan, so perhaps the ratio of intra-family murders is higher since there are fewer murders overall. Don't know where you are from, but many countries (including the US) have a higher rate of family members killing each other than Japan does. But a sad murder-suicide of two elderly women would barely be covered in many countries, where the daily news reporters have so many murders to choose from

A friend of mine had a serious neck injury after somebody jumped out of their flat and hit her, randomly.

I am not sure but it seems to me that in Japan killing family members are more than outsider compared with the other countries. It needs to be fixed by introducing ancient cultures of how to feel true love to the family members.

We're living in a time in a country where people would rather spend more time working and pleasing everybody outside of the home, or focusing on themselves than taking care of their family and everyone inside of it. RIP, mom and daughter.
