Woman opposed to Tokyo Olympics arrested for spraying liquid on torch bearer

Ibaraki prefectural police said Monday they have arrested a 53-year-old woman on suspicion of spraying liquid on an Olympic torch bearer during a relay in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

According to police, Kayoko Takahashi, an unemployed resident of Hitachi City, used a water pistol on a male runner as the Tokyo Olympic torch relay commenced its Ibaraki route leg at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Witnesses said she shouted her opposition to the Tokyo Olympics and called for its cancellation, before spraying the runner multiple times with the water pistol. Police did not say what the liquid was.

Police immediately detained her, and the torch relay runner completed his designated route.

80% of people in Japan already opposed that Olympics.

A middle aged woman with a plastic water pistol, protesting the Olympics:

Use of a water pistol would mean the objective was to extinguish the torch more than anything else.

Thanks! Clear video @AlfieNoakes 7:20am. Hard to hear exactly. English Translation/Transcript for those reading from abroad?

Possible @virusrex 7:29am: . . . Still, it was potentially dangerous.

“Use of a water pistol would mean the objective was to extinguish the torch more than anything else.” -

A more volatile or flammable liquid would have endangered the runner and the people around her, turning it into another Tour de France type incident.

Videos dark but looks like someone was jogging along, or lagging behind, with a large plexiglass shield?

The woman says "Torch no hi o kese, Tokyo Olympic hantai." The police officer says, "Naniyatten noyo?" The second police officer says, "Mizeppo mizeppo, torihiki jyanai, fusha, mizeppo fusha."

Which roughly means the second copper realises its a water pistol wielded by a 'suspicious person' but not a random slasher, I suppose.

"Woman opposed to Tokyo Olympics arrested for spraying liquid on torch bearer"

I saw the video. She did squirt a bit of water toward the torch bearer but it was more funny than dangerous.

Right idea, wrong target.

Her anger should be aimed at the government and the IOC, not that there’s any chance of getting within water-pistol range of any of them.

Water pistol or not- she’d already be 6 feet under in many other countries.

-13 ( +9 / -22 )

@Ooly

So you're insinuating she would be six feet under because she'd have been taken out by paramilitary special ops or a team of highly trained police snipers who'd have made a pledge to protecting the Olympic torch with their lives, right? Because they'd assume the water pistol was a real gun. Yeah, shoot first, ask questions later. So glad I don't live in one of 'those' countries!

Peaceful protest should be allowed and even encouraged. Free the lady already! (I suspect they will though).

What first world countries? Yeah, nah that's a crock. You mean America right? Give me one other first world country.

Everyone here already knows America is a ****hole of country. What's your point?

Thanks for the video. Seems like she was aiming at the torch not the bearer.

Takahashi should be imprisoned for a very, very long time.

She should of used a super soaker rather than a tiny water pistol if she was going to get arrested

I wonder what liquid can hold a water pistol ?

Do police need a chemistry degree to answer that question ?

So far from a terrorist attack.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Yes, courageous, but also stupid at the same time. You can’t beat such a big global mafia with a water pistol. That’s of no use, like for example luggage check at airports to fight drug dealers and global drug cartels, where you eventually find some milligrams while hundreds of tons are undetected in ship containers or camouflaged in machine parts etc.

Use of a water pistol would mean the objective was to extinguish the torch more than anything else.

Assuming it was actually water that was in the pistol.

If you're asking what liquids a water pistol can hold, the list would be long.

In addition to water it can easily hold, kerosene, gasoline, alcohol, acid, lye solution, urine, and any number of caustic, toxic, noxious, and/or infectious liquids.

@garypen

If you're asking what liquids a water pistol can hold, the list would be long.

My coffee cup can also hold a lot of different liquids.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The arrest and the publicizing thereof, is intended to deter others from copying the protest. I am sure Ms. Takahashi will be released after a few apologies and agreeing to stay away from all future Olympic activities.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

My coffee cup can also hold a lot of different liquids.

Thank you for providing another example of how a specifically-named vessel does not necessarily contain the substance in its name, and thus helping to validate my point.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I also oppose the Olympics but this was an act of stupidity. How were the Police present to know whether or not she was spraying water or acid? She could have been quite justifiably shot dead, or seriously injured during arrest. Yes, make your protest but do it with a banner and a song. Spraying people is too much.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

How dare she to be against the Olympics that is to be held at ALL COST and supported by all sponsors and government officials and especially the IOC which took all the money for themselves, but is unwanted by ONLY 80% of the population! Off with her head!!!!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So for Garypen, all holders of water pistol, which is obvious to guess, are potential criminals. Sorry to say but laughable in its reflection.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And what are the charges against her? I guess disturbing public peace or something similar. Even though I think this is more entertaining than disturbing.
