Now if the lady had had a gun . . . .

... she'd have kept it in her purse and as soon as she reached into the purse to grasp it, he would have slit her throat. Remember that he had a knife, which means logically he was already within striking distance and probably behind her. (Let's face it, a knife isn't very threatening at 20 meters)

Japanese people have got to stop carrying around so much freakin' cash! (I know, credit cards and debit cards need to be made more widely accepted first)

Yes, Japan is safe, perhaps just as safe as any other country until something happens to YOU.

Well the incidents that you mentioned all happened in Northern Osaka, go figures, you don't hear about every time a brother gets a cap up his arse in East St. Louis.

Contrast that to Midori-ward Chiba, especially around Osmigaoka is one of the finest Chiba Newtown settlements that developed during the property bubble.

Chiba street crime, no longer just 'one of those days' in Funabashi. Scondrels now lurk in the most affluent neighbourhoods of the capital, targetting unsuspecting housewives who are defenseless while their husbands are at work in Makuhari or over the otherside of the Edogawa.

Actually, we know for a fact the thief was Japanese because the article made no obligatory insinuation that he wasn't.

Ditto virgo's comments:

"It is relatively safe but many stories don't make the news here. The police don't have an open policy and they don't tell the media most things"

A woman was also slashed by a knife wielding man in a supermarket carpark in Mino northern Osaka yesterday at around 1.30pm. Perhaps due to this incident occuring a couple of kilometres from Ikeda City where several children were stabbed to death at their elementary school a few years back most kindergartens, elementary schools and I think some junior and senior high schools in the nearby vicinity were instructed by the police to end classes for the day and send their pupils home. I can tell you first hand that there was a lot of anxiety in the air around Mino at this time yesterday and the streets were pretty quiet while the police searched the area. The man still remains at large and I can't seem to find this story on JT or any other major news service.

It is relatively safe but many stories don't make the news here. The police don't have an open policy and they don't tell the media most things. Unlike America there is no "public record" laws that force them to allow the media to see all their logs. If you talk to local Japanese you will here many tales of unreported crimes. Still safer than most places though.

Japan is still a very safe place if this makes a crime top story

pawatan

I have heard that Japanese media seldom identify stores, restaurants, etc when these kinds of crimes occur, out of consideration for the business which is afraid that it will lose customers.

Any chance of naming the exact location? Chiba's a big place and there's a lot of "major clothing stores" there. It's helpful to know where exactly my local crime is.
