A 62-year-old woman was robbed of about 400,000 yen by a man who snatched her bag while she was walking home in Chiba City.
Police said the incident occurred at around 9:45 p.m. Friday in Wakaba Ward. The woman was walking along the street when a man on a bicycle came up behind her and grabbed her bag and rode off, Sankei Shimbun reported. The woman tried to hang onto her bag but lost her grip and fell down. She was not injured, police said.
The woman, who is a company employee, told police she often carried large sums of money in her bag.
According to the woman’s description, the man was chubby, had short hair and was dressed all in black.

400K is pocket change for some. I once watched a special on host bars, and one infatuated customer was handing over stacks of 10k notes.

Someone stole from her. A man stole money from her which doesn't belong to him. The amount isn't important.
I don't care if someone is carrying 400,000 yen or 400 yen in a bag -- it's not to be stolen! It belongs to that person. So don't take it!
Why do you say that? Why do you stereotype her behavior because of her age?
It is not acceptable to stereotype people's behavior based on their gender, race, or religion. Why is it okay for age?

Also, we don't know that she was carrying the money for her job.
It's quite possible it was her own personal money, and that she wasn't working at the time -- and if so, it's none of her employer's business.

There is nothing in the article that states the money belonged to a company nor that the company made her carry it.

If you knew anything about Japan, you'd know people in their 60s here are not 'older'.

Why was she carrying so much cash? And, why did she carry it often? There is no reason for an average person to carry so much cash regularly. Furthermore, if Japan was to update its banking system to include direct debit transactions there would be no need for anyone to carry so much cash.

Well I normally carry a combination of Yen & U&S dollars equaling about 500,000 Yen since cash is preferred in Japan and you just never know what might catch your eye when out in town. Now she may be the same as me but she may brag about having so much money on her person at any given time and maybe the wrong ears heard her and their goes the money. If she was carrying this money for her company was she headed to the bank for a night deposit ?? or taking it home for the night ??. So the guy was in his Ninja outfit & on a bike so it seems he was out looking for someone to rob.

If you knew anything about Japan, you'd know people here, specially older people, hoard cash at home. Which is why scammers can get so much cash out of them. It's not an age discrimination issue, it's a fact.

If she normally carries that much cash around for no reason, then losing ¥400,000 for her would be like would be what it would be for me losing ¥1,000; she can always withdraw another 400,000 from the atm. Which considering she's 62 she probably stashes all her money at home.
