Woman stabbed by stalker despite asking police for help

A 24-year-old woman was in a serious condition Friday after being stabbed by a man whom she reported to police for stalking her in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.

According to police, the woman consulted with police on May 7 about a former acquaintance, Daichi Miyazaki, a 25-year-old truck driver. Police issued a warning to Miyazaki to stay away from the woman, Fuji TV reported.

However, on Thursday night, the woman was returning home from her job at 11 p.m. when she spotted Miyazaki's car parked near her home, though he was not in it. She went to a police station and asked for help. When police escorted her home around midnight, Miyazaki's car was nowhere to be seen, Fuji quoted officers as saying.

A few minutes after the woman went inside, police heard her scream. The suspect fled out the back way and about 20 minutes later he called police from a convenience store to turn himself in. The knife was found near the house.

Police said Miyazaki told them he climbed up the outside of the house and entered through an unlocked 2nd-floor window at about 9 p.m. He then waited until the woman came home.

The woman lived with her parents who were asleep at the time of the attack.

J-cops at it again!! Police heard screams and the perp fled the back way... Unbelievable!

Yea... they should have checked the house. Hope the girl makes a full recovery.

On a side note - what an absolutely crap stalker. Leaving your own car outside the house of your stalk-ee?! Duuuh.

Saulo, actually I believe the police behaved better in this case than in many past cases.

There is only so much they can do, do to legal restrictions places on police's liberty of action.

Police officer: Would you like us to come in and check the house?

Victim: No thanks. My parents are asleep and I don't want to worry them. I'll be fine. Thank you.

Police officer; Well, good night and call us anytime that you need to.

To be honest imo police did all they could do i mean they gave him a warning than they escorted her home and the car was gone who would have known that he found a way to enter a house. I dont think that police is at fault.

Um, hello! Lock your bloody doors you stupid people! That is the reason door locks, you know. To keep undesirables out of your house! Can't really blame the cops for this one. There is very little they could have done in this case. They can't lock somebody up for stalking until there is an assault, which unfortunately, there was in this case.

Its the Okegawa stalker incident all over again

In their defense, ALL COPS in the world aren't really there to prevent crime. They're only there to mop up afterwards. Until stalkers are put in jail (which ain't never gonna happen) this kind of situation will continue to happen.

Sadly, the mere existence of police lull people into a false sense of security, where they think by complaining to them about potential problems, they've protected themselves.

A better response by the cops might have been to tell this poor woman that they don't have the resources to protect her, any warning they give this guy likely won't work, and she'd better watch her back. Maybe carry some mace or something.

But then again, that would require the police to admit that they aren't the all-powerful masters of society like they want us to think.

Did you expect the police to tuck her in and read a bedtime story? They waited and heard the screams. They actually followed through this time.

I actually can't find fault with the j-cops on this one. I think it's safe to say that everyone assumed the perp had left.

I feel sorry for the woman and hope she can pull through and get well soon. I'm disappointed at the police for not able to apprehend the attacker at the scene of the crime, but they didn't really done anything wrong. This time they took the stalker seriously, issued a warning to him. they also escorted her home that night. And I don't think they will enter the home without her permission. I'm assuming 1 or maybe 2 Police officer was there, so if he stab her and ran out the back, they couldn't really done much since they would first need to enter the home through the front and tend to her. they wouldn't think about circling around the back of the home while the scene of danger was within the home.

Or lock your door! Or tell the parents to at least lock the door before they go to sleep. This could have been a lot worse. He could have killed the parents while they were sleeping and then killed the girl while the police were deciding whether to go in.

He climbed up onto the roof and broke in through a window apparently. Naturally she would have locked the door, duh.

As much as I criticize the J-police, I don't really see anything here to indicate they neglected their jobs or anything like that. True, they could have gone in with the woman and searched her apartment, but hey.

They walked her home, they made sure she was inside, and did everything they should have. I think this article title is misleading. The police probably saved this woman's life by walking her home. Lots of commenters here are acting like they just sat there and watched her get stabbed. They had already left the house when the attack happened. The fact that they were close enough to hear her and call for medical help probably saved her life. Furthermore, there was no reason for them to search her house before leaving, as that is a completely bizarre action for a case of stalking and would probably be seen by the woman as an invasion of privacy. The victim's parents were there, so I think anyone would feel safe in that kind of situation.

This is a basic case of common sense police work. I would like to know what the critics would have done any differently than these officers without psychic knowledge of what was about to happen.

" True, they could have gone in with the woman and searched her apartment, but hey."

Small nitpick, Smith - It was a house. At least 2 stories. Her parents were home, asleep in same.

Agree that the police really can't be blamed. It's not like she asked them to come inside and check that her parents were the only ones inside and they refused.

Really...? That's funny because I've seen the JCops, on numerous occasions, stopping, searching and having people spread eagle on the hood of their car... WHY..? Because they were checking bicycle registrations....

The Jcops need to do a Common-Sense and Reality Check... People that Ride bicycles don't need to be treated like they just robbed the convenience store, but it wouldn't hurt to use a little of this tactic on suspected stalkers... Would it have hurt them to search the Suspected Stalker's Truck...? Maybe they might have found a Knife...? We'll never know now, because they don't apply any common-sense to their policing here in Japan...

Except that's not actually true, is it?

He turned himself on. That shows integrity. At some point he knew what he was doing was wrong. I hope her gets help and I hope she recovers.
