A woman in her 20s was stabbed in the abdomen by a man as she walked home in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture, on Thursday night.

According to police, the attack occurred at around 8:30 p.m. The man fled the scene. The woman was able to call 119 for help, Fuji TV reported.

Police said the woman’s wounds are not life-threatening. She told police she did not know the man who said nothing while he stabbed her. He left the knife at the scene of the crime.

The assailant is described as being middle-aged and was wearing a black windbreaker, black pants and a black face mask.

Another random and cowardly stabbing. If he is caught, he will surely say, “I just wanted to kill someone.”

...black face mask.

Mmm, bit random for me. Maybe you do know them?

I wish one of these losers, upon approaching a young woman, found himself getting pepper sprayed and promptly kicked in the cojones several times.

expat - A lot of these crimes would not occur if the places they occur were properly lit. There is a large park near a commuter station in Chiba that serves an upscale neighborhood about 30 minutes out of Marunouchi that is pitch dark at night. People have no choice but to walk through it to reach their apartment blocks, and it is a magnet for these creeps.

This is actually quite true. Since the 2011 quake most municiprlies have removed 50% or more of their street lighting in order to save electricity. Many of the remaining street lights have been replaced with LED lighting, which use around 10% of the electricity compared to their incandescent counterparts. However, it hasn’t stopped the city offices increasing city taxes.

Its becoming very obvious that, Japan is not really the ‘safety country’ it is plugged to be. It is becoming very dangerous to walk the streets at night alone, especially if you are a woman. However, being a middle aged man, my only fear at night is missing the last train. None of these cowards are gonna pick on me.

While I mostly agree with you, to your last comment I would say that it is hard to defend yourself against something that you have no idea is coming your way. If you were always prepared, you would be a pretty tense, twitchy guy. I hope you stay safe and thank goodness this woman didn't die.

Apparently, it occurred 1km North of Tsukada station.

This should be enough for the police to run some forensics tests and easily find this guy. Street cams and a vague description may work, but fingerprints.......that's a done deal. Gloves? No problem! We have other ways of extracting DNA. I just hope he is caught because I've been reading about some cases like this and think he could be a serial stabber.
