Woman strangled by roommate in Fukuoka

Police on Sunday arrested a 24-year-old resident of Nijo in Fukuoka Prefecture after the 53-year-old woman she lived with was found strangled. Mayuko Shiraishi, manager of a restaurant in the town, is suspected of strangling Mari Hasegawa while she slept around 6 a.m. on Friday.

Police said the two women lived together, and Hasegawa was employed helping Shiraishi with her restaurant. Authorities learned of the crime on Sunday, when Shiraishi brought the cord she used to strangle Hasegawa to the police and confessed to the crime.

Shiraishi was quoted as saying: "Mari's health was deteriorating, and I only wanted to make her comfortable." It is not yet clear if Hasegawa was suffering from any illness.

Was she killed, then? Usually, when someone is killed by strangling, we say "strangled to death". I've been strangled a few times, (not surprisingly) but I'm still alive and kicking.

Moderator: In news reporting, "strangle" always means to kill.

“Mari’s health was deteriorating, and I only wanted to make her comfortable.”

And, that's what friends are for! What kind lady!

I think that's a silly excuse....we are talking about a crime.

Reverse rationalization. She gets angry, kills her, when she's dead she realizes what she's done, and on the way to the cop shop she makes up a lie, tells it to herself, and believes it in order to protect her ego. So she doesn't have to think she is a bad person. Now she is a nice person, she helped her friend, and if they put her in jail, then she will think of herself a as a martyr. Very common among female killers, around the world.

I bet the strangling deterioated her health even more, did she aske for a raise?

Sounds fishy. Murdered her on Friday, but finally told the police on Sunday. If she really wanted to help her friend, she would reported her kind deed much earlier.

The lame excuses just keep on coming!

What a way to go. “Mari’s health was deteriorating, and I only wanted to make her comfortable.” Will that be ‘mercy killing or is murder?' Confession is clear and charge will stick again until accused will change the story, and that will depend which fat lawyer will come along for defense.

"how do you define it if the person is not killed?"

How about "choked"? Heck, wrestlers are always being choked without dying.
