A woman and a taxi driver were attacked by an as-yet-unidentified assailant with a knife in Kitakyushu early Friday morning, police said.
The woman, a 35-year-old restaurant manager, was quoted by police as saying that she got out of the taxi at around 1 a.m. and was suddenly attacked by a man brandishing a knife, Sankei Shimbun reported. She sustained cuts to her face in the attack. The taxi driver attempted to intervene, at which point he too was slashed about the head and ears, police said.
Their attacker, a man dressed in black, fled the scene.

It's good the taxi driver intervened or it could have been worse for the woman.

Before coming here in Japan, I used to believe that this country is the safest and the nicest, but (sigh)....

What's with all of these knife-waving morons these days? Glad the woman and the cabbie weren't seriously injured. Big hand to the cabbie... that's the second time this week we've had a brave taxi driver in the news.

a friendly warning from Kudo-kai. impressive cabbie though

Man, a Japanese taxi driver will soon become a symbol of bravery ... you know ... newspapers, comic books. I am sure if there would be a taxi driver around that Flower bar from that other article, the incident could have ended differently!

@ Tinz Nana There's less gun crime in Japan.

@ mangosqueezesbanana - Yes - in Japan you just get stabbed to death...

an important detail is that she was the manager of a restaurant, but of a restaurant that focused more on girls than food. and she was trying to keep some people out of her establishment, hence the "friendly warning".

Japan has changed for the worse. This is the reason why most women in Japan should carry a pepper spray as a protection in their purse. There should be classes available on how to use this incase of unexpected attacks. Be prepared.

Another couragous cabby. This week the taxi drivers are really saving the day!

To all those people saying how unsafe Japan is becoming, you need to stop and think for a bit. Stuff like this happesn every Friday and Saturday night where I live and doesn't even make the news. Japan is still very safe, despite the opinion you have formed from reading Japan Today.
