The trial of a woman accused of abandoning the bodies of two babies in an apartment in Nagoya earlier this year has begun.

At the first hearing held at the Nagoya District Court, the defendant Megumi Irimura, 38, admitted to the charge, NHK reported.

According to the indictment, Irimura is accused of abandoning the bodies of two babies she gave birth to in the bathroom of an apartment in Naka Ward, by wrapping them in towels and placing them in plastic bags in a cardboard box.

A man who was cleaning the apartment noticed a foul smell coming from the cardboard box at around 4:50 p.m. on May 12 and called 110. Police found the skeletonized remains of two infants in the box under the kitchen sink.

The next day, police arrested Irimura, a part-time worker at an adult entertainment establishment and acquaintance of the man who rented the apartment.

In their opening statement Friday, prosecutors pointed out, "After giving birth in the bathroom, she realized the babies were dead, so she placed them in a cardboard box because she thought she would be arrested if anyone found out."

Irimura began living in the apartment in 2019.
