Police have arrested a 19-year-old youth for attacking a 70-year-old man with an ice pick in a park in Yokohama.
According to police, the incident occurred in Marine Park at around 9:30 p.m. Monday. Fuji TV reported that the suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, waited on a path until the man approached him and then asked the man to help him find a lost contact lens. As the man bent over, the youth lunged at him with an ice pick, striking him in the face and chest, and then fled.
Police said the victim suffered serious injuries but is in a stable condition.
Police said the suspect told his friend prior to the attack that he wanted to see what it was like to kill someone, Fuji reported. When the friend heard about the attack, he contacted police who took the suspect into custody.

If he really wanted to see what it is like, he should immediately go to France and request to join the French Foreign Legion and get sent to a mission in Africa. He would get all of the rush that he wanted if he made it through.

Glad he had no access to firearms or we might have been seeing some deaths. Including the lads.

Japan should reconsider kid-glove treatment for teen criminals.

I hope the poor old man somehow recovers from this awful attempt on his life. I'm fairly sure the "youth" will now be tried as an adult due to this being a very serious indictable offence - attempted murder. Let's hope he is put away for several decades.

Would not pass the mental test let alone the physical trauma for the legion. Attacking anyone is not on, a 70yo to SEE what it's like to kill someone? What did he expect after doing it, a shinning light and a special gift? An ice pick?, way to much time reading comics. Did he not realize that jails are full of criminal geniuses. Now he can count himself just another criminal genius....in jail.

WTF!!! Why are Japanese thugs always so gutless they have to pick in the defenceless? It's just disgusting!

If he wanted to see what it was like to kill someone he should have tried on himself first, brainless worthless piece of scum !

FYI, Marine Park in Yokohama is the artificial beach close to Hakkeijima Sea Paradise. It really shows you how deranged he must be to try this in such a relatively busy public place.
He wanted to see what it was like to kill someone? Shocking, but I've read similar excuses 2 or 3 times in the past. There are crazy people everywhere but I wonder if there is a particular reluctance to report the signs of insanity before things get out of hand. The friend only came forward after the incident. I'm sure the friend feels pretty guilty right about now.
True, but to be honest, if I had the choice of being shot or stabbed multiple times with one of those little ice picks, I would choose to be shot every time. The injuries that a rounded ice pick can cause are also much worse than a bladed knife. It just shows you how truly evil this guy is.

An ice pick??!! Nut job, straight up nut job.
Dukeleto
They need to bury that ice pick in the 19yo external orifice.

Dig a deep dark hole and then toss this psychopath in it for the rest of his miserable life.

What sick, disgusting $*@%!!! Makes me so angry. A 70-year-old man??? Who was kind enough to stop, bend over, and help you look for a contact lens in the dark?? That's not a mistake of youth. That's a mistake of a diseased mind. Lock him up and throw away the key.

Well, at least, his friend actually reported this to the police. I suspect there are some "friends" who actually might keep these things a secret.
Glad the older gentleman seems to be in stable condition.

Wow this surprise me because the choice of weapon in Japan is 100% if the time a knife, regardless its still a weapon and Japan is considered safe??? I think they have too many knives in Japan!!! Yeah right!!!!!Sarcastically speaking!!

More proof (as if we needed anymore) that Japan is not as safe as many assume.
Peter St. Christopher Kelly
These are examples of why I am so paranoid walking around. The country is reasonably 'safe' but so many freak accidents and attacks.
nath
That's a failure in logic. One incident does not make prove country unsafe. If you actually looked at the facts and real numbers and didn't believe the hype of the news, you would see that Japan is extremely safe.
So yes, we do need more proof, because right now you haven't provided any.

And because he's a 19 (19!) year old minor he'll spend a couple years in a juvenile delinquent facility, released, given a new identity and a fresh start in life. Not much of a punishment, is it? I hope the elderly man is OK, but, being so viciously attacked at that age, I'm less than hopeful for a full recovery. The Japanese government really need to change the laws in this country to punish these kinds of punks more appropriately. It probably won't happen until lawmakers become prey themselves to these violent punks.

There's no doubt that Japan has far less crime than almost anywhere else, thats a fact. However, what's truly horrifying about this incident is the pointless and random nature of the attack.
It makes people realise that it could have been them. (similarly with the Akihabara stabbing and the man who was going around cutting woman with a razor blades as they walked by).

" Why are Japanese thugs always so gutless they have to pick in the defenceless? It's just disgusting!"
That's a fair question, but remove the nationalism. Thugs typically attack the defenseless, just like schoolyard bullies do to diminutive others. They wouldn't attempt an attack on a stronger(or armed) person.
The lesson is; Don't be a soft target.
Disillusioned
Sadly, you are correct! One should add though, of you are a young woman, child or elderly you are in the high risk category to be attacked. If, however, you are an average person able to defend one's self you should feel very safe because these gutless thugs will only pray on the defenceless. If you look at all the random attacks over the last several years they have all been targeted at people that will not fight back. Children, elderly and young women are always the targets of these losers. This is a result of the Molly-coddled and bullying society that creates these little thugs that think they are so tough because they can pick in someone that won't fight back. I would love to see playground punishment brought into Japan to teach these little plicks that they are just losers! Furthermore, as a foreigner, if I was to teach these little maggots some street justice it is I that would end up in custody.

Who said it was rounded?

He wanted to see what it was like to kill someone, he says, but he'll get less than a few months for nearly doing so. Quite the system when premeditated murder is flobbed off because the kid has a few months to go before he is an 'adult'. Granted, the victim isn't dead yet, but even if the kid went back to finish it what punishment would he get?
Londoner144
If you're old enough to commit attempted murder, then you're old enough to be tried as an adult. Also in my opinion there is no such thing as "not guilty by reason of insanity" as I believe the person would have to be insane to commit such a despicable crime.

To be fair here Strangerland you claimed that the shooting by Elliot Rodger was the ultimate proof that the USA was a Broken State. You didn't state it was all other shootings including the one by Elliot Rodger but you were very specific in stating it was the Elliot Rodger and only the Elliot Rodger incident that was the ultimate proof that the USA was Broken State. So its not like you yourself don't engage in such failure of logic.

You mean the nationality, right? Sadly, I have to disagree with you. Nowhere else have I experienced so much 'prey-on-the-weak'-mentality as in Japan. It seems to be deeply rooted that you treat those perceived as being 'below' you in society as lesser beings. Perhaps these attacks on elderly, kids and the homeless is a manifestation of this.
This 'youngster' sounds like he is not operating under full mental capacity. Normally functioning minds do not act on the weird thoughts - this joker clearly did. Seems to be one of those people on the trains, reading comics and talking to themselves. With proper attention directed at him earlier, this might have been avoided. Time to step up mental health care, Japan.

I wonder if he thought "I'm still 19, I'd better hurry up before I'm chargeable as an adult". In cases like this, that's what should happen.
