Ami I the only one who wasn't impressed by Bohemian Rhapsody? Very formulaic, telegraphed set-ups for Greatest Hits set pieces, choppily edited, sanitised and trite.

Oh well...

Quite a decent number of wins, there. Some expected, some not. Well done to the winners. Can't wait to see the Spiderman: Into the Spider Verse movie, now. Looks great fun.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I never quite get the "sanitised" criticism. People watch the movie for the joy of the band, the creation and the music. Delving deep into the worst parts of Freddie Mercury's life is for another journey, once that probably fewer people are interested in. I am sure he would want to be remembered by what he created, rather than by the less palatable parts of his personal life - they didn't define him.

I wouldn't have minded a warts and all film. My problem was with the timeline, the announcement of his illness and other details that were all juggled about.

That said, Rami Malek's performance was just amazing and he stood head and shoulders above everyone else in the film. Although, that could be down to the fact that the other actors had to work with characters that were not fully fleshed out.

I wonder how Sacha Baron Cohen feels about it, given his falling out with the surviving members of Queen.

And caretaker director Dexter Fletcher must be chuffed!

Orson Welles and even Hitchcock did not make it in their time.....

Hollywood giving itself awards for movies that obsess over race and homosexuality. It figures.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Lets watch the lesser, nominated but undertop, for their merit.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Really uncool of him to walk out just because you don't like the best picture choice. That said, I am happy my man Spike Lee got one to bring back to NYC.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Yeah what is it with liberals not being able to accept the results when they lose? Very low class by Spike Lee.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

Spike Lee's best movie will forever be Do The Right Thing which never got nominated. BlacKKKlansman was good but I heard they did a lot of tweaking from the book and some main characters/events didn't exist in the book. That is Hollywood for you!

Rami Malek won as I predicted. he is very intelligent and articulates all the chaaracter he portrays perfectly. If you havent seen Mr Robot yet, do yourself a favor and WATCH it!

Those who missed out on the Oscars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy4GL6RtVOk

We were kangz black Panther as predicted won, a crap movie, crap script, and 'actors' won just to stroke egos, does it deserve to win, really?

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Green Book main actor also deserve to win. Great film too.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

At least Black Panther won for things it actually deserved, and not for the one thing it did not.

As far as Spike Lee is concerned, what a classless child. You didn't see Glenn Close storm out after losing to someone else for a seventh time. Grow up, Lee.

Diverse winners - everybody walked away with something.

In addition to the usual, there's also Brits, gay immigrant singer, B&W foreign language, minorities and Spike Lee, even the Best Picture had a superhero blockbuster. Opened with Queen, and Lady Gaga lit social media with her duet song performance and won an award. And of course, the upsets the underdogs won too

Without a host and a strict speech timer rule, the Oscars was a bit over 3 hours long. And ratings are up 12%, driven by a 13% gain among young-adult viewers who may have been coaxed back to the Oscars by a broader slate of more popular nominated films.

Btw, Spike Lee didn't storm out of the auditorium (he came back later) because he lost - it's because Green Book is a controversial film. The criticisms are valid, but it's still a good film that everyone can agree on. If ya don't know how it's controversial, the film is worth a watch.

@lostrune2

I know about the controversy around the film, but Spike Lee did not leave because of that. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“I’m snakebit. Every time someone’s driving somebody, I lose,” he later told reporters backstage, in reference to his breakout film, “Do the Right Thing,” losing the Oscar for Best Screenplay to “Driving Miss Daisy” in 1990. “I thought I was court side at the Garden and the refs made a bad call.”

He was angry he lost and couldn’t act like a grown up. He only came back because Academy ushers wouldn’t let him leave until the speeches were over.

Yoy think? I didn't notice, I just enjoyed some good films. Which of them did you see that offended you?

Menace II Society is a great film, although I'm not sure I'd describe it as "fun". The thing is, it's not a Spike Lee film. It was directed by the Hughes Brothers.

Do The Right Thing was racist to Italian Americans when you re-watch it carefully.. they were not all bad characters and why loot the store and destroy another races business? not sure if thats good story telling or encouraging youth in the US to loot from other races? correct me if I am wrong, but as a Japanese, I saw it in this way..

That's the madness of racism, as depicted in the film. It doesn't give you answers, it just shows rage and frustration - no neat, happy Hollywood endings.

The rage needs to be directed at the elite who are happy to keep the status quo of divide and conquer going.

I know about the controversy around the film, but Spike Lee did not leave because of that. Here’s what he had to say about it:

He wasn't the only one who has an issue with the film:

https://variety.com/2019/film/news/spike-lee-oscars-green-book-1203148178/

After presenter Julia Roberts announced “Green Book” as Best Picture, AP reporter Andrew Dalton was one of several journalists who noticed Lee wave his arms in anger before storming out of the theater. However, before he could leave, he was stopped at the doors and was forced to return to his seat once the speeches had stopped.

Jordan Peele, the Oscar-winning writer-director behind last year’s “Get Out,” reportedly didn’t clap either, nor did other attendees nearby.

The backlash appears to be in response to controversy surrounding the film, which had been criticized for perpetuating what some saw as a “white savior” narrative approach to examining race relations. The film topped “BlacKkKlansman,” “Roma” and other critical favorites to win the night’s top prize. “Green Book” was also embroiled in controversy involving the family members of the late Don Shirley, whom the film was based on.

Previously, Shirley’s nephew, Edwin Shirley III, and brother, Maurice Shirley openly criticized the film in an interview with Shadow And Act, calling its portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley a “Symphony of Lies” – a statement that film star Viggo Mortensen called “unjustified” and “unfair.”

Spike Lee could had lost to any other film that's not Green Book, and he wouldn't had stormed out. It's the fact that it's Green Book that beat him, not because he lost the Best Picture award.

So you're just going to ignore the fact that he actually stated to the press that he was angry that he lost, not about the controversy? Go back and re-read that quote from him and tell me where he says anything about the controversy of the film. He just made a joke comparing it to Driving Miss Daisy because that was another time that he lost. Yes, others were upset about the controversy. He was not one of them.
