Absolutely lovely acceptance speech by Yuh-Jung Youn after winning Best Supporting Actress for “Minari.” Well-deserved! (Full acceptance speech at https://youtu.be/wrMxfLgb9CE)

Nomadland was sleep inducing dirge

which is why it won

For me, McDormand will always be Marge Gunderson, the pregnant police chief from Brainerd who brought Gaear Grimsrud to book.

What's Glenn Close gotta do to win one of these darn things? The most woke Oscars ever, and she's still left as a bridesmaid, It's a travesty.

It's encouraging to see so many talented British people nominated and winning.

China-born Zhao also became just the second woman to win best director, and the first woman of color.

In this generation, the news still mention the words woman and colour.. ... sad!

It was a year when, to paraphrase Norma Desmond, the pictures got smaller were overwhelmingly seen in the home, not in the big screen, during a pandemic year that forced theaters close and prompted radical change in Hollywood.

It was also perhaps the diverse Academy Awards ever, with more women and more actors of color nominated than ever before — and Sunday brought a litany of records and firsts across many categories, spanning everything from hairstyling to composing to acting.

So many lesser-known titles and foreign names - the year of Covid

Released by the Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures, “Nomadland” premiered at a drive in and debuted in theaters, but found its largest audience on Hulu.

That encapsulates what a weird year! Drive-in to theaters to Hulu to Best Picture

Inside the transit hub (trains kept running), nominees sat at cozy, lamp-lit tables around an intimate amphitheater. Some moments — like Glenn Close getting down to “Da Butt” — were more relaxed

Pretty much the scene of the night - not only that old Glenn Close knew about "Da Butt" (it was a music trivia question) but knew how to dance it, lol

Anyways, because of Covid, not many people went to see movies last year. Heck, they don't even know what movies were released! Of course they're not gonna be familiar with the year's awards - they don't have vested interests on which movies and actors should win

But if anything, this is makes it the purest the Oscars Awards have been for a long time. Think about it: the big-budget Hollywood blockbusters have been postponed till there can be more people in the theaters

So what's been released were the lower-budget films that don't depend on satisfying a huge mass of lowest common denominator. This is the best chance for the lesser-knowns to get their names in the spotlight - and they took advantage!

Furthermore, the lack of gatherings due to Covid also all-but-eliminated the typical studio ad campaigns pushing voters to vote for their movies. So voters would actually have to vote for --gasp-- what they actually like!

So this is the purest Oscars for once in your lifetime

Perhaps her performance failed to capture the imagination? I haven't seen it yet, have you?

Could you explain why having actors of different colours is "woke"? It seems to be a right wing talking point, usually from people who don't think anyone other than white people deserve to be onscreen, let alone be nominated.

This raises the ultimate question: Will cinematic artistry ever wean American audiences from their demand for obligatory car chase scenes and pyrotechnic explosions?

This raises the ultimate question: Will cinematic artistry ever wean American audiences from their demand for obligatory car chase scenes and pyrotechnic explosions?

Let's not forget the helicopters. Hollywood loves helicopters.

We can all appreciate ‘cinematic artistry’ yet can’t understand your complaint @NCIS Reruns 4:06pm. Very few “action-filled, American blockbusters” have won a Oscar.

Btw: Every @NCIS Rerun has graphically-detailed, gruesome murders & autopsies; extensive automatic weapons firefights; high-speed car chases amongst an exposed, vulnerable civilian population; and, of course, the exaggerated pyrotechnics resulting from even the slightest “fender bender”.

So then, what’s your attraction to “Hollywood” TV shows?

What's Glenn Close gotta do to win one of these darn things?

Be in a better movie then "Hillbilly Elegy", for one.

The adage is “one film for ‘cinematic artistry@NCIS Reruns & @PeterNeil 4:20pm ... And, another one for the bigger paycheck. Academy Award winner Zhao and her boyfriend, BAFTA winner/cinematographer Joshua James Richards are currently filming Disney/Marvel’s “The Eternals”.

We imagine that film will be “a box-office flop” IF they go with your suggestions to “forget the helicopters” and try to...

- “...wean American audiences from their demand for obligatory car chase scenes and pyrotechnic explosions.” -

Case in point: Look what happen to Oscar winner Ang Lee’s career after he tried too much “cinematic artistry’” with 2003’s “Hulk”.

The corporate execs and accountants at Disney need to recoup some of their “Captain Marvel” and “Solo: A StarWars Story” losses quick. Plus, China may be recalling and cutting of Disney’s financing as a backlash at Ms. Zhao’ s past criticisms of their government.

"Losses"? Captain Marvel made 1.128 billion dollars at the box office.

The fashion is Hermes’ @Bungle 5:48p. (Haven’t you been keeping up with all the Oscar “buzz” here, at JT?(OMG! The tension has been building in recent weeks!) Perhaps you should look at JToday’s accompanying Oscars fashion article: “Oscars red carpet: Hollywood stars ditch hoodies, PJs for glamour”.

Btw: Her choice of hairstyle and minimal makeup is reflective of themes in her filming... AND also, so someone will be “baited” into making an unintentional, yet “off-colour” observation. For example, harmlessly using the term “off-colour”, indicating a ‘piqued’ appearance. While “Leia” could be considered ‘complimentary’, some may be ‘triggered’ by your reference to “Yoda’. (No offense intended, StarWars fans.)

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Yes @LK 5:45p. “Brokeback Mountain” and “Life of Pi” were winners for “cinematic artistry”. But, was “Gemini Man” a typical, Will Smith box-office success fore the studios? Forget the ‘action flicks”. Mr. Lee needs to stick with the beautiful films and storytelling for which he’s lauded.

I find this confounding as well. Everyone has a color - stating that others are without color is to deny their humanity.

CONGRATULATIONS.

I don't know what color you are, but your shirts are definitely brown! :D

Or, that’s what theory would want you to believe, @Jsapc Apr. 26 5:30pm:

[The corporate execs and accountants at Disney need to recoup some of their losses quick.] - "Losses"? Captain Marvel made 1.128 billion dollars at the box office.”

It’s all a been a rumored ‘shell game”. Some indications were those “advanced ticket sales” to “sold out” showings and then, theatres are 10-30% empty at “showtime”. Comcast has been romancing Disney in their bids to buy it since 2004. Comcast owns Fandango, the largest online seller of tickets, at the time(2019).
